    POSITION SUMMARY:

    The Managing Consultant is responsible for initiating, cultivating, and maintaining a portfolio of large-scale projects in the areas of consulting, development, and technical assistance. These activities are focused on the delivery and support of high-quality professional learning and capacity building for education professionals through face-to-face and remote, technology-enhanced means. In addition, the Managing Consultant seeks to proactively grow and cultivate a portfolio that reflects and integrates McREL’s range of services to provide coverage for self and junior staff. This includes responding to RFPs, effectively listening to and understanding client needs and desired outcomes, devising appropriate responses that address those needs and support attainment of those outcomes, and identifying and developing opportunities to offer new services to existing clients.

    The Managing Consultant is responsible for mentoring and developing staff and may have direct supervision responsibilities. THIS POSITION REQUIRES FREQUENT NATIONAL TRAVEL AND OCCASIONAL INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL.

     

    As a Managing Consultant, you will make an impact by:

    • Managing a client portfolio typically consisting of large-scale projects that offer opportunities for Consulting Associates/Consultants to provide direct service to clients and build staff expertise.
    • Maintaining and developing current and potential client relationships.
    • Understanding McREL’s competitive value and articulating and discussing the range of McREL services, representing how McREL’s unique capabilities will align with the client’s needs and desired outcomes.
    • Identifying opportunities for new business and additional products or services to existing clients, including RFP response and direct client outreach. Increasingly able to contribute to conceptualizing project designs.
    • Preparing proposals and developing project work plans, timelines, and staffing resources needed to successfully support proposed projects.
    • Leading existing projects to ensure delivery of high-quality results to clients that are on time and on budget.
    • Managing project resources and shares progress and performance information with other managers and directors.
    • Responding to internal and external requests in a timely matter, including, at times, during non-traditional business hours.
    • Using research-based content and resources in consulting, professional learning, and technical assistance work.
    • Contributing to activities (writing, speaking, presenting, conducting research) that elevate recognition as a leader in the field.
    • Performing quality assurance activities such as reviewing bids and proposals and providing content expertise.
    • Encouraging inter-departmental collaboration by being a role model, and leading initiatives to build departmental rapport.
    • Proactively mentoring and developing staff.
    • Partnering with other leaders to proactively provide and share feedback about staff performance.
    • Proactively monitoring their own and others’ coverage, staying within allotted project hours, and alerting management to possible gaps in project coverage.
    • Making decisions, performing, and encouraging others to act in a manner which is congruent with organizational goals, strategy, vision, mission, and values.
    • Modeling and championing corporate policies, procedures, and processes.
    • Performing other duties as assigned.

     

    QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS:

    • Strong oral and written communication skills (including technical writing, small-group facilitation, and presentation skills).
    • Strong qualitative and quantitative analytical skills.
    • Strong organizational and project management skills.
    • Knowledge and understanding of significant issues in education.
    • Knowledge of methodologies and methods of inquiry.
    • Ability to apply research or evaluation theory.
    • General knowledge of instrument design. Ability to create instruments based on extant ones.
    • Ability to collect data using various approaches (focus groups, interviews, surveys).
    • Ability to prepare complex data sets for analysis, including cleaning, aggregating, disaggregating, and recoding data.
    • Advanced skill using SPSS (preferred), SAS, R, or MAXQDA, and online survey software.
    • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.

     

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    • This position requires a minimum of master’s degree or equivalent.
      • Master’s degree with at least five years of relevant work experience in K–12 education as a teacher in a leadership role, administrator, central office staff, or consultant elsewhere.

    • Ph.D. with at least three years of relevant work experience in K–12 education as a teacher in a leadership role, administrator, central office staff, or consultant elsewhere.

    • 1+ year of relevant business development experience (competitive grant writing, direct sales, etc.).

    • 2+ years of large-scale project management.

     

    PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

    • Ph.D. with at least three years of relevant work experience in K–12 education as a teacher in a leadership role, administrator, central office staff, or consultant elsewhere.
    • Supervision or mentorship experience.
    • Previous consulting experience.
    • Experience with large-scale competitive grant writing and responding to RFPs.

     

    TRAVEL:

    Must be willing and able to perform all national and international travel (including overnight and commercial airline travel) that is necessary to accomplish the essential functions of this position. TRAVEL FOR THIS POSITION IS ESTIMATED AT UP TO 60%.
