    Surgical technologists are health professionals, who are an integral part of the team of medical practitioners providing surgical care to patients. CST’s work under the supervision of a surgeon to facilitate safe and effective invasive surgical procedures, ensuring that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. CST’s possess expertise in the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique and combine the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies to facilitate a physician's performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.

    Reports to OR Manager.

    REQUIRED SKILLS:

    Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities: Other duties may be assigned:

    1. Efficiently and effectively assists physician with operative procedures • Anticipates surgeon/physician’s needs both in preparing for procedures and during procedure • Demonstrates knowledge of specific responsibilities in all emergency situations.

    2. Ensures sterility of all supplies and instruments during set up of surgical procedures.

    3. Handles instruments in a manner which prolongs “life” of instrument.

    4. Assists circulating nurse and surgical team in maintaining sterile environment.

    5. Assists circulating nurse in gathering necessary surgical supplies and equipment. Is responsible for doing sponge, needle, and instrument count pre-operatively and intra-operative with the circulating nurse.

    6. Gowns and gloves surgeons and assistants.

    7. Assists in keeping physician preference cards accurate/updated.

    8. Retains all specimens to be sent to pathology, confirming source/name of specimen with surgeon.

    9. Transports all surgical equipment to appropriate cleaning areas. Assists in sterile supply with cleaning and reprocessing of instrument sets.

    10. Interacts appropriately and effectively with all patients/others regardless of age or ethnic background.

    11. Uses Standard Universal Precautions, appropriate hand hygiene, personal protective equipment, and safe practices to ensure personal safety and a safe environment.

    12. Assists with environmental hazard and infection control surveillance and participates in emergency preparedness drills.

    13. Follows all equipment and safety guidelines and is responsible for knowledgeable use and care of equipment.

    14. Serves as a resource to other members of the health care team.

    15. Attends inservices, conferences, and meetings as required.

    16. Communicates effectively and courteously with visitors, physicians, and their office staffs, patients, and employees. Maintains patient, physician, and employee privacy and confidentiality per policy.

    17. Maintains designated certifications such as CPR, as offered by the center.

    18. Acts in accordance with the vision, mission, and business philosophy of the Center.

    19. Complies with Policies and Procedures, and adheres to safety guidelines to ensure a safe work and patient care environment.

    20. Uses good body mechanics.

    21. Informs Pre-Op/PACU Manager of applicable day-to-day situations.

    22. Follows employee health and other personnel and staffing policies.

    REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

    Education and/or Experience: High School Diploma / GED; completion of a Scrub Technician Certification Program.

    4 years experience as a Scrub Tech in multiple specialties or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

    CPR certification required.

    Able to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions.

    Able to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

    Other skills and abilities: General familiarity with medical terminology as it pertains to anatomy and surgical procedures for an operating room.

    Required Skills Required Experience
