    We are currently seeking talented, high-energy nursing professionals to join our Perioperative Team. The Operating Room Registered Nurse (RN) Internship and Fellowship is geared toward new graduates who have a strong interest in perioperative nursing as well as experienced RNs whose goal is to become a perioperative RN.

    The Internship/Fellowship is a paid full time, intensive four (4) month comprehensive, blended learning educational program that utilizes PeriOp 101 Core Curriculum developed by the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN), lectures, demonstrations and practice labs. Each Intern/Fellow works with preceptors in specific clinical rotations. The goal is to prepare a highly select group of RNs for independent practice in the surgical specialties at NCSC.

    Ideal candidates for application to the NCSC OPERATING ROOM RN INTERNSHIP/FELLOWSHIP are:

    • Nursing students graduating in December 2021 who will be eligible to sit for NCLEX and obtain licensure for the State of Texas prior to the start of the program
    • Experienced RNs
    • RNs who have been out of the intraoperative setting for more than three (3) years

    Job Summary:

    As the RN Circulator, upon completion of the Intern/Fellowship, you will have responsibility for patient safety by designing, coordinating and delivering care to meet the needs of the surgical patient.

    • Performs in depth, systematic assessment of all assigned patients.

    • Formulates collaborative and individualized plan of care and identifies expected patient outcomes, using the nursing process.

    • Implements, evaluates and documents patient care interventions and effectiveness in accordance with care plan.

    • Prepare for and adapt procedures to meet individual needs of pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.

    • Ensure all documentation and consents are complete prior to surgery.

    • Advocate for each patient’s safety.

    • Follow standard policies and procedures for surgical/procedural interventions, adapting for surgeon and anesthesia provider preference.

    • Ready and prepared for daily on time case starts; on time shift arrival and work attendance.

    • Demonstrate compassion and caring for patients, their family members and surgical team members.

    • Demonstrate knowledge of anesthetic drugs, actions and side effects; and knowledge of regional anesthetic techniques and moderate sedation.

    • Demonstrate knowledge of location, care and operation of surgical equipment/instruments.

    • Demonstrate competence in preparing and cleaning OR suites before and between cases and after terminal cases, based on patient infection classification.

    • Position, prepare skin and prevent electrosurgical events during patient care in the operating room.

    • Provide postsurgical patient hand-off report to RN in next unit of care.

    • Recognize and respond to emergencies in the operating room suite.

    • Available to take emergency Call during weekdays and on weekends as assigned.

    Required Skills

    • Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing.
    • Minimum requirement is an Associate Degree in Nursing; Bachelor’s degree is preferred.
    • Minimum of 2-3 years experience, Med/Surg experience preferred. 
    • Licensure: Current unrestricted Texas RN license
    • Life Support Certification: BLS through the American Heart Association
    • Able to lift, push, pull and stand without difficulty
