We're working on a market-transforming solution to accelerate climate action in large cities. We're trying to cast a wide net for a diverse pool of applicants. Folks with non-traditional backgrounds, including career-changers, and those from under-represented groups in the energy fields are encouraged to get in touch. Interns are paid $20/hr (for current undergraduates or those residing outside NYC) or $25/hr (for post-undergraduates and/or those residing in NYC). This role is for 10-20 hours weekly for ~12-16 weeks.

The position is fully remote, but may include some travel within the NYC metro area if of interest.

As our Building Science Intern you will:

    • Work closely with Cadence OneFive's Mechanical Engineers, who will mentor you on the technical aspects of building science
    • Complete work with an overarching purpose: improve the reliability and transparency of building retrofits, giving decision makers confidence to upgrade buildings, reducing negative climate impact and improving housing quality
    • Learn how and where decades of building science and retrofit experience can be condensed and applied to the majority of multifamily buildings
    • Help translate the traditionally manual methods of supporting energy retrofits into a more automated process that allows projects to move into construction more quickly and at a lower cost
    • Build a repository that documents building retrofit energy savings and cost calculations across a wide variety of performance improvement measures, developing and using a standardized documentation system that both mechanical and software/application engineers can reference, update, and share externally. This may include learning and describing the following for each energy saving measure:
      • Description of a given measure and its potential benefits to a building
      • Limitations and applicability of the measure
      • Calculations of energy savings and capital cost, and their sources
      • Suggestions for where a given calculation method or input could be improved by analyzing the impact of inputs on confidence of the output value
    • Approach your work systematically, so that what you create becomes as automatic as possible to update and improve over time.
    • Share your work progress with the rest of the team

A typical day may look like:

    • Reviewing and updating existing energy calculations and costs
    • Researching and documenting new energy calculations and costs
    • Reviewing energy audit and property needs assessment reports for the most important energy-related information
    • Developing documentation and calculation templates that will help us bridge the gap between manual spreadsheet work and computer code

What you will get out of this experience:

    • Understanding of the most common urban multifamily building types and characteristics
    • Awareness of the factors that drive building energy usage and of the broad-scale opportunities to reduce that usage
    • Supported experience working as a manager-of-one within a remote company, balancing autonomy and teamwork

    About you:

    • Appreciate good documentation and transparency as a way to communicate and collaborate
    • Curiosity about what impacts building performance as an energy using structure and as a dwelling unit where people actually live
    • Desire to work in a fully remote environment with a good amount of asynchronous communication and regular meetings for decision making and feedback
    • Experience with or the desire to learn
      1. Github, Google Workspace for documentation
      2. Building science and energy calculations
    • Possibly a recent graduate, or a undergraduate engineering student (Junior or Senior)
    • Strong interest and performance in thermodynamics, heat and mass transfer coursework and a desire to apply that to existing buildings
    • Eligible for the NYSERDA Clean Energy Internship Program, by qualifying as at least one of the following:
      1. Individual currently attending or who attended a degree program at a college or university, located in New York State within the last 12 months
      2. A New York State resident attending or who attended college or university outside of New York State within the last 12 months

You'll probably feel energized on our team if you like:

    • Bringing your whole self to work
    • Working all-remote with autonomy and flexibility
    • Making an impact and creating visible, positive changes
    • Learning and being creative i.e. exploring, experimenting, and discovering
    • Being great and taking pride in the excellence of your work
    • Sharing your expertise and insights
    • Encouraging your teammates' growth and progress
    • Excitement and a little bit of risk and adventure

On the flip side, you might not be happy on our team if you don't believe:

    • Climate action and climate justice are important challenges to address
    • Diverse perspectives help drive better decisions
    • Cooperation and collaboration can help solve big problems faster
    • Self actualization is a worthy goal and healthy work/life balance is important
    • It's okay to enjoy yourself while solving serious, important problems

What to expect of the hiring process

    1. Resume Review: Please be patient with us :)
    2. An interview about you. We'll want to know what motivates you, how you like to work, and what drew your attention to this posting
    3. You will meet with two Mechanical Engineers.
