    Job Title: Staff Attorney

    Location: 525 S Virgil Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90020

    Reports To: Vice President and Assistant General Counsel

    Group: Corporate Legal

    The CALIFORNIA ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS ® is seeking a Staff Attorney to join our Corporate Legal team. The Staff Attorney will be involved with legal support and assistance of local associations in association rules, policies and other assigned legal matters in the Corporate Legal Department and other divisions of the Legal Department. The Primary responsibility will be to work with attorneys in the Legal department to assemble, summarize and provide legal content for newsletters and specialty sections as assigned (for example, property management, accessibility ADA or other topics that become of high interest). Secondary responsibility is assignments for specialty issues such as MLS or other subjects as needed, including corporate documents drafting and contract review and drafting.

    Responsibilities

    • Write newsletters and other content for highly relevant subject for real estate practitioners
    • Work with specialties and collateral materials to augment member legal, Legal Action fund and litigation and local advocacy content, including housing issues
    • Support to C.A.R. committees as assigned which may include MLS technical drafting of rules, procedures, contracts focused on certain issues of note to local Associations as well as real estate practitioners
    • Development, drafting, and/or editing of educational materials and communications for distribution to association members.
    • Provide legal articles and other legal materials for newsletters, materials and other communication in plain English but technical accuracy
    • Focus on specialties as assigned such as property management
    • Provides heightened visibility for legal materials to membership
    • Includes guest articles by outside attorneys if appropriate and summaries of relevant cases of interest to the industry
    • Acquire deep knowledge in MLS areas and antitrust laws relating to that and other aspects impacting Association compliance in that area
    • Perform other job duties as needed

    Requirements

    • JD from ABA Approved law school
    • Current member of California State Bar
    • 3 years as practicing attorney

    Skills Required:

    • Ability to exercise independent judgment confidently and quickly.
    • Understanding of a wide variety of obtaining visibility for information for members through multiple platforms.
    • Database research and word processing
    • Excellent writing skills
    • Ability to take responsibility and perform a variety of general business and trade association law tasks.
    • Problem solving and good legal reasoning skills.
    • Intermediate to advanced level in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills, and outstanding customer service orientation.
    • Ability to function effectively in a variety of challenging situations and circumstances, including difficult project deadlines, demanding customers, tight budgets, and evolving goals and objectives.
    • Ability to work effectively with co-workers, customers and others by sharing ideas in a constructive and positive manner.
    • Excellent work ethic and attendance.
    • Consistency in giving feedback regarding work progress, timetable and issues.
