    Position Description:

    ORTHODONTIC DENTAL ASSISTANT

    FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

    REPORTS TO: Orthodontic Department Manager

    Position Summary

    Under supervision, this position assists the dentist in the delivery of quality ortho dental health care. Supports ortho dental care delivery by preparing treatment room patient, instruments, and materials. Works closely with Orthodontic lead regarding orthodontic operations. Results and services of position may impact the short-term direction and/or operations of orthodontic services for Company. Decisions made have an impact on compliance, resources, and service as well as may impact public image.

    Supervision

    This position has no supervisory responsibility; however, provides guidance to the Ortho Dental Assistants including delegation of duties, as appropriate.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    Always BDG Teammates will support compliance-related items by:

    • Assists the dentist with ortho treatment procedures. Escorts patients to/from treatment room.

    • Takes and develops dental x-rays.

    • Asks about the patient's medical history and takes blood pressure and pulse. Records information.

    • Cleaning Specifications: Practice a high standard of sanitation and tidiness in the treatment rooms. Strictly follow the cleaning specifications for all equipment. Prepares and sterilizes ortho instruments and equipment.

    • Helps patients feel comfortable before, during and after dental treatment. Provides patients with instructions for follow-up oral care, follow-up appointments, etc.

    • Handle emergency situations by following established policies and procedures.

    • Participate in all daily huddles, team meetings, and training workshops.

    • Maintain and review patient charts (manually and electronically) accurately and up-to-date.

    • Enter data into the computer system as required. Assist in the updating of patient charts as needed. Notify Business Assistant or Office manager, if treatments change before treatment begins.

    • Maintains inventory of ortho supplies. Limits waste.

    • Maintains confidentiality of information.

    Always Conform to all safety rules and use all appropriate safety equipment.

    Performs all other related duties, as assigned. May be requested to assist with special projects from time to time.

    Minimum Qualifications (Industry, Work Experience and/or Education)

    • High School Diploma (HSD). Associate degree or certificate from an accredited college or technical school preferred. A minimum of 3 years Orthodontic experience required Computer Skills
    • Proficient in Microsoft Word and MS Outlook. Previous database preferred.
    • License, Registration, or Certifications
    • Must have and maintain a valid State Driver's License, maintain automobile insurance coverage and have access to an automobile.
    • Certified Dental Assistant preferred.
    • CPR Certification.

    • Must have excellent verbal communication skills.
    • Must be able to listen to patients, dentist and hygienists; and follow directions.

    Regular attendance is required including varied hours. At times, individual must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with ability to handle and prioritize multiple, competing tasks and demands and to consult Supervisor when necessary. Overtime requires approval by Supervisor. Schedules subject to change; and travel throughout the offices, including shifting schedules at last minute for business needs. Position requires traveling throughout the organization on a regular basis.

    Physical Demands

    The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee regularly is required to stand, walk, sit, use hands/fingers; and reach with hands and arms. Employees must work in tight quarters on a small part of the body, passing precise tools and instruments. Often bending over in assisting the dentist or dental hygienist. Employee must be able to remain in work area for several hours at a time. The employee occasionally lifts and/or moves up to twenty (20) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus. It also requires manual dexterity in combination of eye / hand coordination. Work environment is subject to many interruptions, varying and unpredictable situations and time pressures related to multiple tasks. Work is normally performed inside. There is exposure to blood, chemicals and cleaning supplies.

    OSHA Category

    Category I: Personnel who engage in activities normally with exposure to blood or bodily fluids.

    Ortho dental assistants wear safety glasses, surgical masks, protective clothing, and gloves to protect themselves and patients from infectious diseases. They also must follow safety procedures to minimize risks associated with x-ray machines.
