    The North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) is a voluntary association of, by and for local governments, and was established to assist local governments in planning for common needs, cooperating for mutual benefit, and coordinating for sound regional development.  NCTCOG’s purpose is to strengthen both the individual and collective power of local governments and to help them recognize regional opportunities, eliminate unnecessary duplication, and make joint decisions.  NCTCOG is located in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.

    The Department of Environment and Development is seeking experienced professionals to join its team as an Environment & Development Planner I.  Successful applicants will work under the general direction of the Senior Environment and Development Planner to pursue a variety of goals to achieve sustainable environmental excellence in this region.  Assignments may include a variety of topics, including but not limited to, solid waste management; water resources planning for stormwater quality and quantity; public works coordination; and urban and land-use planning and development related efforts that promote quality of life improvement.     The purpose of this position is to assist and participate in team efforts with more senior professional staff in the completion of projects and assignments related to the Department of Environment & Development. This will be accomplished through activities including, but not limited to:

     RESPONSIBILITIES MAY INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO, THE FOLLOWING:

    • Coordinating, planning, and preparing materials for meetings
    • Conducting research
    • Creating maps and databases
    • Reviewing and revising documents
    • Collecting and analyzing environmental, development, energy, and demographic data
    • Compiling and summarizing studies
    • Program planning and development
    • Monitoring schedules of deliverables and grant/project budgets
    • Grant and report writing
    • Writing reports and compiling documents for publishing
    • Preparing public outreach and education materials, presentations, and supporting external meetings
    • Coordinating with local government members, federal, state, and local partners
    • Attending meetings and representing the Agency within and beyond the region

    Required Skills

    • Strong verbal and written communication skills
    • Geographic Information Systems (GIS) skills, desired
    • Detail-oriented, organized, and ability to handle multiple tasks and deadlines
    • Presenting and communicating to internal and external groups
    • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills
    • Good interpersonal skills
    • Must be able to work independently and in a team environment
    • Ability to operate Windows-based computer programs such as Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, and Access

    Required Experience

    • Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. Knowledge is normally acquired through four years of college resulting in a Bachelor's degree in a related field of study.
    • Up to and including one year of experience in the environment and development fields and/or local government operations.
