    Job Description

    Substitutes fill in for absences lasting a day, a week, and sometimes longer, and are scheduled to work only when regular staff members are absent. You may be scheduled for work in advance, but often will be called upon for same day and next day work. The Substitute Camp Counselor role is the perfect opportunity for those inspired by the idea of a Galileo summer, and who are open to or require a more flexible summer commitment.

    YOU WILL

    • Travel to multiple sites within a geographic region, providing support in whatever way most benefits the specific camp team with whom you work on any assigned day:

    • Supervise and lead a group of 15-28 campers each week

    • Maintain a safe and joyful environment for campers and provide leadership and camp spirit to all.

    • Continually assess and support camper engagement by monitoring group dynamics, as well as the needs of individual campers.

    • Facilitate team connection time with your campers through group activities, games, etc.

    • Partner with instructors to support behavior management needs through restorative justice approaches

    • Prep and organize project materials with the guidance of classroom instructors

    • Provide both group and individual support to campers across diverse age groups, ability levels, and support needs.

    • Report to the Staff Coverage Team and be responsible for updating your schedule weekly: * Attend all scheduled shifts within the availability you provide * Frequently check Coverage Team communication channels and read and respond to outreach and updates * Deliver feedback and questions about your work experience to the Staff Coverage Team in real-time

    • Provide exemplary customer service to each camper, family, and guardian at all times: * Enthusiastically greet all campers and guardians ensuring a safe and welcoming process for all. * Follow all check-in/check-out procedures to ensure efficiency and accurate daily attendance. * Communicate with families as needed about their camper’s experience. * Help campers start and finish their day with positive energy and excitement, ensuring a safe hand-off to/from guardians.

    • Enthusiastically and collaboratively participate in all camp activities: * Collaborate with your teammates to plan, set up, and run daily activities. * Supervise and lead campers to ensure safety at all times during ceremonies, all-camp activities, snack and lunch * Promote a positive camp experience at all times with your energy and camp spirit. * Actively participate in camp chants, songs and perform skits in opening and closing ceremonies.

    • Receive professional development and ongoing coaching to grow your camper management and operations experience: * Receive paid online training before camp begins to introduce you to the innovation education movement, the Galileo Innovation Approach, and company policies and best practices. * Attend 2 in-person days of paid training where you will meet your team, set up camp, and participate in training.

    ** COMPENSATION AND PERKS**

    • Your exact pay will be determined based on a variety of factors, including work-site location and tenure:

  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    • 1+ years experience working with groups of 15+ children at a time, such as assisting in a classroom environment, group childcare, tutoring, coaching and/or mentoring kids, after-school program experience, etc.
    • College coursework in Education or Child Development preferred, but not required
    • Work experience in a school or childcare setting is a plus, but not required.
    • Availability to work 8-hour shifts daily, Monday - Friday, for the duration of camp.
      • For consistency and camper safety, we prioritize applicants who are able to commit to working for the full duration of camp (4-8 continuous weeks, depending on the camp location).
      • Applicants with less than 3 weeks of availability will not be considered for this role.
    • Bilingual in English and Spanish is a plus, but not required
    • Must be at least 18 years of age by May 13th, 2024
    • Ability to balance multiple tasks while working with a sense of urgency and enthusiasm.
    • Ability to complete all pre-camp tasks, including background checks, state-mandated certifications, electronic onboarding paperwork, and online training prior to the start of camp.

    Additional Information

    ** SCHEDULE**

    All camps operate Monday - Friday and you will be scheduled based on the availability you provide when you are hired. Staff are also required to attend two pre-camp set-up days, which vary by site and may be scheduled between Thursday - Sunday before camp opens. Shifts vary by position and location and can start as early as 7:00 a.m. and end as late as 6:00 p.m.
