  • Responsibilities

    Global Merchant & Network Services (GMNS) brings together American Express' Merchant-and Network-related businesses including Global Merchant Services, Global Network Services, and Strategic Partnerships. Global Merchant Services is responsible for maintaining the relationships with the millions of Merchants, Global, National and Regional, that accept American Express, as well as through our third party acquirers and aggregator partners. Our goal is to be an indispensable payments partner to our Merchants: simultaneously delivering differentiated products and services and driving revenue growth for both Merchants and American Express.

    What type of work can you expect to do in Pricing at American Express?

    This is an excellent opportunity for an individual to gain deep knowledge of the merchant business, as well as exposure to and insight from leaders across the Blue Box. The intern should be a dynamic individual who can work closely with senior leaders and has the right ambition to motivate change.

    • Supporting the development of pricing strategies based on quantitative data analytics and provide recommendations on key financial / commercial terms during merchant negotiations

    • Providing analytical support for business cases for various merchant pricing scenarios, model P&L impacts, and perform sensitivity analyses to drive agile business decisions

    • Develop sophisticated financial models to help scenario analyses for large scale pricing initiatives and evaluating their effectiveness

    • Build compelling, merchant-facing materials for client negotiations, which articulate and quantify the AXP value proposition

    • Draw merchant-specific insights from internal data (transactions, merchant profiles, etc.) and external data (analyst reports, industry research, etc.) to identify key opportunities and challenges during a negotiation

    • Establish relationships across merchant acquisition and client management teams (CLM) that drive team accountability and ensure goal achievement

    • Supply to the ongoing development of an infrastructure that identifies opportunities for sharing the best business practices, streamlines implementation of contract/payment terms, and other internal processes

    Skills/Experience

    • Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint at an advanced level

    • Shown strategic thought leadership and comfort working with unstructured problems

    • Strong aptitude for analytics; demonstrated ability to develop quality financial models and draw valuable insights from large amounts of financial data

    • Excellent interpersonal skills - both written and oral -- with experience leading discussions with Senior Leaders where decisions need to be made based on the facts presented

    • Ability to excel in a fast-paced, dynamic team environment, which places a premium on getting results

    • Creative thinker who is willing to question traditional ways of doing things and develop innovative approaches to old challenges

    • Strong project management skills with full ownership from analysis through to implementation

    • Passionate focus on the customer; demonstrated desire to understand and address for customer needs

    • Proven ability to balance multiple requests and prioritize accordingly

    • Capacity to remain calm and flexible under pressure

    • Skills in SAS / SQL desirable

    Requirements/Qualifications

    • Currently enrolled in full-time bachelor’s degree program

    • Students must have a graduation date between December 2023 and June 2024
