    Job Description

     

    Position Purpose/Summary The Network Engineer will engineer and design network infrastructure in support of cellular, internet, and VLAN products for internal and external customers; responsible for technical oversight of each project.

     

    Primary Duties & Responsibilities

    1.    Maintain and provision network equipment (routers, switches, compression and traffic shaping devices) providing updates for configuration changes, VLAN/IP routing additions/changes, and firmware. 

    2.    Maintain network monitoring systems ensuring QoS, traffic management with optimization. 

    3.    Provision and maintain customer networks as contracted for maintenance and support.

    4.    Designs network configurations to meet needs of TelAlaska customers.

    5.    Works with telecom engineers to integrate voice, data and video applications on local and wide area networks.

    6.    Develops, maintains and updates technical documentation libraries, posting commonly accessed references and FAQs to the company intranet.

    7.    Aids management in vendor selection and contract & SLA monitoring.

    8.    Works with cross-functional teams in the design and implementation of new technologies.

    9.    Trains junior staff members, acting as an escalation point for technical troubleshooting.

    10.    Works closely with the vendors’ support staffs to resolve issues with networking hardware, firmware and software. 

    11.    Designs and/or approves network designs developed for clients and oversee their deployment, assuring that implementations meet all design and budgetary parameters.

    12.    Assists departmental management with the development of systems standards, short and long term goals, and strategic directions.

    13.    Remains current on new technological developments and techniques and attains certifications relevant to TelAlaska’s business model.

    14.    Develops and supervises the implementation of firewall policy, standards and procedures.

    15.    Manages internet firewall configurations and router access lists.

    16.    Serves as a liaison between regional WAN/Internet engineers on operational issues.

    17.    Understands the following routing protocols: TCP/IP, RIP, GRE, MPLS, BGP, EIGRP, OSPF and multicast.

    18.    Proficiently uses the following technologies:

    a.    KU/KA/C-Band VSAT for Internet delivery, VoIP, video conferencing, IPTV, multicast 

    b.    layer 2 switching, VLAN, TLS and MPLS (detailed knowledge)

    c.    VPN, VPN concentrators and PIX firewall design, implementation and support (detailed knowledge)

    d.    authentication, management and monitoring technology; MRTG, SNMP, ACS, RADIUS (detailed knowledge)

    e.    selection, support, configuration of Cisco routing and switching platforms in an ISP and customer environment (expert knowledge)

    f.    PSTN services including traditional TDM services and IP based services, STP, SS7, TLS, MPLS networks (detailed understanding)

    g.    licensed and unlicensed microwave transport systems

    h.    DSL and cable modem delivery systems (detailed knowledge)

    i.    DS-3/OC based Sonet optical equipment (working/configuring knowledge)

    j.    UNIX Linux based operating systems, including being able install, configure and maintain UNIX Linux servers

    1.    Provides customer engineering, design, and support functions to the sales staff.

    2.    On call 24x7 for outages and maintenance.

    3.    Provide backup support for the cellular network.

    4.    Troubleshoot circuit related issues with connectivity and call quality.

    5.    Interface with revenue accounting to develop scripts for capturing data for billing and tracking purposes.

     

    Knowledge, Abilities, & Skills for Success

    1.    Must be legally employable by any employer in the United States and not require sponsorship.

    2.    Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  

    3.    Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  

    4.    Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from others. 

    5.    Ability to calculate figures and amounts and ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

    6.    Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. 

    7.    Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

    8.    CPR certification preferred; valid driver’s license required.  In addition, for those driver’s license that are not issued by the state of Alaska, you are required to convert your license to an Alaska Driver’s License pursuant to AS 28.15.021 (2) any employee who will be driving while in the state of Alaska, must obtain an Alaska Driver’s license within 90 days of entrance into the state.  Failure to do so will result in the termination of your employment until such license is obtained.

     

    Qualifications A Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology or 4 years of business networking experience; having successfully completed a Cisco or equivalent certification program for CCDA, or CCNP is desired.  

     

    Working Conditions While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
