    Patty Baker Humane Society is hiring for our Canine Behavior Manager position. The Canine Behavior Manager is responsible for implementing the behavior program and leading a team responsible for enriching the lives of shelter dogs, improving adoptability of shelter dogs through training and other behavior modification using positive and minimally aversive techniques, and educating staff, volunteers, and the public on best practices in dog handling, training, care, and behavioral management.

    Schedule: This is an on-site position in Naples, Florida. Weekend and holiday availability required.

    Responsibilities

    Lead, manage, and supervise Canine Behavior Specialists and canine volunteers in the implementation of Patty Baker Humane Society Naples’ canine behavior program

    Conduct behavioral assessments of dogs soon after intake and regularly throughout their stay at PBHSN

    Develop and implement behavior modification and training plans to prepare dogs for adoption

    Monitor behavioral health of dogs, and report concerns to the Chief Operating Officer and/or the Chief Medical Officer or other PBHSN Veterinarians as appropriate

    Work with Foster Coordinator to identify foster placement of dogs with special behavioral needs; educate, train, and support foster caregivers as needed

    Participate in collaborative meetings to discuss progress of “behavior dogs” and make recommendations for further intervention or euthanasia

    Enter accurate behavior information into the shelter database to facilitate successful adoptions

    Counsel prospective adopters on dogs with special behavioral needs

    Facilitate adoption matches through conversation and help set realistic expectations of time, care, and financial commitment

    Coordinate follow-up contact with adopters of dogs with special behavioral needs

    Break up conflict between dogs safely and effectively

    Working with the Adoptions and Guest Services Supervisor, Shelter Managers, and Dog Care Supervisor, select dogs for offsite community events and other community activities

    Development and implement dog handling and behavioral intervention protocols for staff, volunteers, foster caregivers, and new adopters

    Requirements

    High school diploma or GED required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in an animal behavior field preferred

    Minimum 5 years of experience in training, handling, and implementing positive reinforcement training in an animal shelter other professional dog training setting

    Behavior certification such as CPDT-KA, CBCC-KA, CDBC, or CSB-D preferred but not required

    Effective management and supervisory skills

    Ability to handle dogs and occasional other companion animals of all sizes, ages, temperaments and needs safely and appropriately

    Extensive knowledge of canine health, behavior, socialization, and husbandry/care/enrichment best practices

    Patience and tact with sensitive and passionate personnel involved in the care of shelter animals

    Strong interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence

    Engaging public speaking skills

    Excellent writing skills

    Coaching and training skills

    Highly organized and able to manage multiple projects

    Adaptable and flexible

    Computer proficiency, including data entry and Microsoft Office

    Familiarity with Shelterluv preferred, or ability to quickly learn new software

    Fluency in English is required; fluency in Spanish preferred but not required

    The following physical requirements are considered essential to this position:

    The ability to see at approximately 20/20 vision with or without assistive devices

    The ability to hear or read lips with or without assistive devices

    The ability to use arms, hands, and fingers, including fine motor movements

    The ability to independently lift up to 40 lbs

    Personnel in this position can expect to engage in moderate physical labor, including but not limited to bending, stooping, crouching, pushing, pulling, and lifting, as well as sitting or standing for long periods of time.

    Compensation and Benefits

    $65,000 annually
