    JOB PURPOSE

    The Packaging Engineer will be responsible for conducting a first principles based understanding, evaluating, specifying and prototyping packaging requirements for Canoo's parts that may be sourced and/or distributed from external suppliers in addition to internal requirements. You will work with General Assembly Parts Requirements (Presentation, QPC, Quality, etc.) and work in conjunction with the rest of the Supply Chain and Purchasing, Manufacturing, Materials Management, Test, Engineering, Logistics, and New Product Introduction (NPI) teams to define and specify applicable packaging requirements. You will support the design, development, qualification, and implementation of packaging materials along with the investigation of packaging/shipping deviations. The Packaging Engineer will report to In Charge of Logistics and Sustainment and will utilize industry standard methodologies to conduct the design, development, qualification, and implementation of packaging and labeling materials.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Specify Packaging Requirements and standards for parts, assemblies, and modules
    • Collaborate with Design Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, New Product Introduction(NPI), and Logistics team(s) to intercept and design new Package(s) for ongoing changes
    • Proactively monitor to ensure that existing packaging solutions are meeting specified KPI's
    • Communicate Engineering requirements between Supply Chain and Purchasing to facilitate material planning
    • Consolidate inputs from across the business into executive reviews highlighting risks and opportunities
    • Design and develops protective packaging containers, dunnage and unique shipping racks – domestic and international
    • Create drawings, specifications, samples, and written analyses of packaging for approvals
    • Analyze engineering drawings and specifications to determine physical requirements, quality, safety, and materials needs
    • Support the design and implementation of shipping racks and custom returnable packaging solutions for major truck components
    • Drive inventory management and maintenance programs of our shipping rack fleets
    • Support new product introductions by ensuring parts have a packaging solution prior to release of the new product feature
    • Establish and maintain packaging standards
    • Maintain project timelines, main interface with packaging suppliers, component suppliers purchasing and factory needs
    • Create and maintain departmental packaging information systems
    • Communicate and maintain procedures for packaging analysis, justification, and implementation utilizing Total Cost and Lean Manufacturing concepts
    • Develop, monitor, and adjust budgets as required
    • Lead and facilitate cross functional teams for all packaging activities
    • Coordinate for line-side storage and ergonomic considerations

    REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

    • Bachelor's Degree in Manufacturing, Engineering, Packaging, or equivalent work experience with evidence of exceptional ability
    • 8+ years experience 
    • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and able to accommodate change to scope, timeline, or focus without sacrificing execution
    • Adept at communicating technical information to non-technical audiences
    • Capable of creating written reports, proposals and project documentation that speaks to all levels of audience
    • Knowledge of logistics, transportation alternatives and customer expectations
    • Knowledge of manufacturing processes, product designs, safety, quality and workflow needs
    • Knowledge of / experience in packaging testing related to lithium ion batteries
    • Extensive detailed material flow analysis experience to make data-driven decisions and summarize results for executives
    • Deep understanding of material delivery methods (e.g. powered industrial equipment, automated guided vehicles, conveyor, rail-guided vehicles) and strategies (e.g. forklift-free)
    • Demonstrated leadership and ability to drive projects with diverse teams in a high-volume manufacturing environment
    • Experience quantitatively solving ambiguous factory design problems at a systems level
    • Exemplary verbal and written communication skills
    • Experience designing greenfield facility layouts and/or material flow strategy
    • Experience with CATIA, Solid works, AutoCAD, Sketchup
    • Experience with discrete event simulation software

    PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

    • Automotive experience preferred
    • Willing to travel extensively (50%+)
    • Available for all shifts and extended hours. Work schedule may vary depending on business needs, and flexibility is required
    • Proven ability to manage, launch, and achieve standardization practices using process improvement tools
    • Must be a self-starter with proven ability to give and gain the respect of all employees
    • Must be proficient with Microsoft Office software (i.e., Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)
