    Capital B is a first-of-its-kind local and national nonprofit news organization reporting for Black communities across the country that launched on January 31 with a national website and its first local newsroom in Atlanta. Capital B Atlanta is looking for a community engagement editor to bring the questions and curiosities of Black local residents to our newsroom, ensuring our reporting meets the needs of our target audience.  

    As part of a small team, the person in this role will help redefine how local journalism can serve Black people in our communities. They will work closely with Capital B Atlanta's editor to obsessively understand what Black people in Atlanta need and want to know about life in their neighborhood, city, and region, and help the team meet those needs through innovative and accessible journalism.

    This is not a behind-the-desk job — this editor will be a primary link to the communities we serve, conducting deep, in-person listening and building strong relationships out in the field to ensure the information needs of Black people in Atlanta drive and shape our journalism. 

    This position reports to Capital B's lead editor in Atlanta. 

    Salary: $70,000+

    Location: Atlanta

    Responsibilities:

    • Use your vast knowledge of Atlanta to identify the information needs of Black residents
    • Lead our ongoing community listening program, where you will foster Capital B's relationships with the communities we serve
    • Attend weekly community meetings and events to meet face-to-face with residents 
    • Feed community tips and information to Atlanta editor and beat reporters on local and national teams 
    • Make our journalism widely accessible with an innovative community distribution strategy, including developing partnerships with local groups and organizations 
    • Conceive of and host community events, on and offline
    • Help build Capital B Atlanta's membership program, and contribute to other audience development tasks

    What you'll bring:

    • A deep connection to Atlanta's Black communities, and a deep curiosity about people, places, and circumstances in the region 
    • An obsessive understanding of local news and current events, particularly pertaining to Black Atlanta 
    • Fearlessness about meeting and engaging with new people 
    • A passion for learning new information and sharing it 
    • Excellent written and aural communication skills
    • 4+ years of experience in community engagement work, with connections in metro Atlanta
    • Bold thinking and a track record of making big things happen
    • Sensitivity to the responsibilities of reporting for underrepresented communities
    • Ability to work both collaboratively and independently
    • Journalism and/or social media experience is a plus
