Atlanta, GA

  • Responsibilities

Capital B is a first-of-its-kind local and national nonprofit news organization reporting for Black communities across the country. Cofounded by CEO Lauren Williams (former senior vice president and editor-in-chief of Vox) and Chief Audience Officer Akoto Ofori-Atta (former managing editor of The Trace), Capital B is looking for a health reporter to join its growing Atlanta newsroom and deliver stories that Black residents in the region need.

Metro Atlanta is home to two million Black people, with unreported and underreported stories around every corner. The Atlanta health reporter will bring comprehensive reporting to health coverage tailored specifically to this audience. From COVID-19 and food insecurity to healthcare coverage disparities and gaps in mortality rates, the issues at stake for Black residents are stark, and the opportunity for an enterprising reporter to make a difference is big. The ideal candidate for this position has the drive to uncover stories and angles that other outlets miss, and has the flexibility to pursue big, meaty stories as well as quick turn pieces on the beat.  This position reports to the Atlanta editor.

    SALARY: $68,000+

    LOCATION: Atlanta

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Report and write daily, weekly, and longer lead enterprise news stories about health for a Black Metro Atlanta audience
    • Work with editor and community engagement editor to craft story ideas based on your news judgment and beat expertise, as well as community information needs
    • Write explanatory service pieces pertaining to your beat
    • Moderate or participate in Capital B Atlanta live journalism events focused on health
    • Partner with national team reporters and editors for occasional national stories, and with outside journalists on occasional co-publishing partnerships

    WHAT YOU'LL BRING

    • Academic or professional knowledge of public health and health disparities, particularly in Black communities
    • Deep understanding of the specific health issues in the Atlanta region, and their impact on Black residents
    • The ability to contextualize national stories for a local audience
    • Local sources and/or ideas for how to build out the beat
    • 3+ years reporting experience
    • Strong story ideas
    • Clear, concise writing. We're looking for readable and accessible stories at Capital B.
    • An extreme audience focus — Capital B's work is not for industry peers or award committees, although it's a plus if they like it!
    • A non-traditional mindset (Traditional journalism experience is an asset, but Capital B is operating under the belief that some of traditional journalism is broken.)
    • Sensitivity to the responsibilities of reporting for underrepresented communities
    • Empathy, kindness, patience

    WHAT WE'LL BRING:

    • A compassionate, supportive workplace
    • Unlimited PTO + company holidays
    • 20 weeks parental leave
    • 12 weeks caregiver leave
    • 401K
    • Dental, health, and vision insurance

    • Health and dependent care flex plans
    • Short-term and long-term disability
    • Professional development fund
