Capital B is a startup local and national nonprofit news organization reporting for Black communities across the country. We are looking for an innovative journalist to not only build and manage a roster of freelancers, but help coach some of our beat reporters.

The ideal candidate is a generalist who is successful at editing a range of news topics under the Capital B umbrella: from education to the intersection of sports and identity, to science and health, to criminal justice, to politics and policy . The Deputy National Editor will also bring a keen understanding of the way various issues and institutions affect Black people in America today and the historical context that led us here. As we enter an election year, particular expertise in politics and/or criminal justice topics is a bonus.

We're looking for a solid line editor who is comfortable working with reporters with a range of experience levels and who has a demonstrated history as a good team builder and collaborator, and someone who isn't afraid to experiment with how we frame and structure stories. The right journalist for this role will be patient, and will excel at finding the best story structure for the piece, encouraging writers when to think outside the box, and explaining how to get from point A to B. We want a wordsmith who can work with reporters on writing style and language use at the sentence and paragraph level.

We're a small and collaborative team — and the Deputy National Editor is a leader who understands that a one-size-fits-all approach to managing is dated. We lead with empathy, compassion, and respect.

    • Knack for headline writing and creative storytelling
    • Big-picture story ideas
    • A collegial mindset and adaptability to different personalities
