Capital B is a first-of-its-kind local and national nonprofit news organization reporting for Black communities across the country. Cofounded by CEO Lauren Williams (former senior vice president and editor-in-chief of Vox) and Chief Audience Officer Akoto Ofori-Atta (former managing editor of The Trace), Capital B is looking for an enterprising national editor to build and run a high-performing team of investigative and beat reporters.

Capital B's national editor will have the awesome opportunity to work with the editorial director and national reporting team to deliver ambitious journalism for Black audiences. You'll manage a team of reporters producing accountability, investigative and enterprise stories covering politics, health, education, criminal justice, climate, and money. In this role, you'll identify important stories and work with reporters to deliver impact for Black audiences.

This position reports to the editorial director.

Salary: $120,000+

Location: Remote

Responsibilities:

• Manage national team of 4-5 reporters 
• Edit and assign stories
• Maintain editorial calendar
• Work with editors to develop editorial programming for live events and other off-platform activations
• Work with editorial director and audience team on partnerships and collaborations

What you'll bring:

• A deep interest in Black media and serving Black news consumers
• 7+ years as an editor
• Story editing and assigning magic
• The ability and desire to look beyond the daily grind and see new ideas and opportunities
• An extreme audience focus — Capital B's work is not for industry peers or awards committees, although it's a plus if they like it!
• A non-traditional mindset (Traditional journalism experience is an asset, but Capital B is operating under the belief that some of traditional journalism is broken, and you should be, too.)
• Investigations experience, as a reporter or editor
• Empathy, kindness, patience
