Job Position: Cardiothoracic Physician Assistant
Location: San Francisco, CA (San Francisco VA Health Care System (SFVAHCS))
Employment Type: Contract-Based, W2 Schedule: Part-time; 12 hours per week (2 days per week, 6 hours per day)
Period of Performance: Base year starting July 1, 2026, with options through June 30, 2031
Hourly Rate: $130–$145/hour (W‑2), depending on experience, EVH volume,
robotic experience, VA credentialing status, and clinical fit
Position Overview
Kaleidoscope Supply Services supports the staffing of this position on behalf of a client company. If selected, you will be employed directly by the client contractor and will not be considered a federal employee or a Department of Veterans Affairs employee for any purpose. This role supports a Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) federal contract at the San Francisco VA Health Care System (SFVAHCS). You will work alongside VA teams to help deliver critical surgical services that support veterans and the VA’s mission.
Key Responsibilities
Surgical Assisting: Perform first and second assistant responsibilities in cardiothoracic surgery within the operating room.
Robotic Procedures: Serve as a bedside assistant for robotic thoracic procedures.
Endoscopic Harvesting: Perform endoscopic radial and saphenous vein harvesting.
Clinical Procedures: Execute ultrasound-guided arterial and venous access for central line placement, chest tube and pigtail insertion/removal, and Swan-Ganz catheter insertion/removal.
Patient Care: Perform cardioversion, remove pacing wires, and provide direct patient care 99.8% of the time.
Documentation: Maintain medical record documentation in the VA's Electronic Health Record (EHR) system, including writing required operative and procedure-related documentation after each case.
Qualifications & Skills
Education & Certification: Must have passed the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination (PANCE).
Must maintain current certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
Licensure: Must hold a full, current, and unrestricted Physician Assistant license issued by any U.S. State, Territory, or the District of Columbia. California licensure will be required prior to the start date in accordance with SFVAHCS privileging requirements.
Experience: Documented experience of more than 100 endoscopic procedures in both radial and saphenous vein harvesting locations.
Required Training: Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Life Support (BLS) certifications.
Completion of VA-mandated training, including Privacy/HIPAA and Cybersecurity Awareness.
Health Requirements: Proof of immunity or vaccination for Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR), Varicella, and Acellular Pertussis (Tdap).
Annual Influenza vaccination and annual Tuberculosis (PPD/IGRA) testing.
Hepatitis B vaccination series or surface antigen test results.
Vetting: Must successfully complete VA credentialing and privileging (VetPro), background investigation, and PIV issuance prior to performing any direct patient care.
Compensation
Hourly pay: Paid only for hours worked onsite, as verified by time and attendance.
No paid federal holidays (holiday pay is not reimbursed under this contract).
No vacation or personal leave is provided.
Paid sick leave is provided in accordance with Executive Order 13706 (1 hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked, up to 56 hours per year).
Overtime is not permitted unless expressly authorized in writing by the Contracting Officer.
