    The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is a non-profit, bipartisan public policy organization established in 1962 to provide strategic insights and practical policy solutions to decisionmakers concerned with global security and prosperity. Over the years, it has grown to be one of the largest organizations of its kind, with a staff of some 200 employees, including more than 120 analysts working to address the changing dynamics of international security across the globe.

     

    JOB SUMMARY:

    The CSIS Korea Chair seeks a creative, hard-working, and energetic individual to assist with a range of substantive and administrative activities as the Chair’s Deputy Director and Fellow/Senior Fellow. The successful candidate for this position will report to Victor Cha, Senior Vice President and Korea Chair, and have an excellent grounding in Asian studies and have exceptional analytical and organizational skills. Under the supervision of the Korea Chair, the Deputy Director and Fellow/Senior Fellow will work with Dr. Cha to manage the day-to-day workflow of the Chair and will play a key role in advancing all program projects and initiatives.

    The Deputy Director and Fellow/Senior Fellow will be responsible for daily managerial responsibilities, including personnel management, budget oversight, fundraising, and grant and contract management. The Chair will also look to the Deputy Director and Fellow/Senior Fellow to be an active contributor to major programmatic decisions, to be a key adviser and to actively support strategic planning and development. The position will be hired either as a Fellow or Senior Fellow based on qualifications toward required skills and experience.

     

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The Deputy Director/ Senior Fellow reports the Chair/Director. Functions may include but are not limited to the following:

    • Manages and coordinates the day-to-day work flow of the program in close consultation with the Chair/Director • Provides close supervision and active mentoring of staff of 3-4 research associates/assistants • Takes a role in strengthening the program’s fundraising, communication and outreach strategy • Works closely with the staff to manage a vibrant visiting fellows and intern program • Works closely with the Director and associated staff to oversee the program budget process; manages grants and contracts, including preparing reports; develops applications and proposals for new opportunities; develops new initiatives and/or follow-on funding • Supports the Director in managing relationships within CSIS and with external stakeholders and partners • Provides thought leadership and strategic guidance for the program • Leads both individual and collaborative research projects that advance critical issues in the field

     

    KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE:

    • M.A./M.S. required, PhD preferred • At least 5 years professional experience in the field of Asia/Korea • Experience managing personnel, projects, budgets, and grants strongly preferred • Superior writing, editing, and analytical skills • Ability to operate under pressure and in a fast-paced environment • Demonstrated ability to plan, execute and lead complex events and/or conferences • Strong communication and convening skills including the ability to effectively present information • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail • Ability to interact with and respond to questions from a range of individuals with diverse interests, backgrounds and dispositions from across a wide spectrum of views on Korea policy issues • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated success working in highly collaborative, team based environments with a demonstrated commitment to professional development, mentoring and education • Candidates should possess sound judgment and impeccable integrity, positive attitude and creative outlook

     

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Proficiency in Korean (write, read, speak) is highly desirable. • Substantive research and/or practitioner experience working on technology/business/economic issues preferred • Prior peer-reviewed publication record demonstrating research acumen surrounding the Korean peninsula in related fields • Demonstrated administrative experience with grant-funded research programs and managerial experiences with staff.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Provide a range of developmentally appropriate programs and activities for 6-12 year-olds. Programming can include, but is not limited to, academic enrichment activities, homework assistance, and athletic and recreational activities. Ensure programming is varied and appropriate for the school year and summer programs.
    • Ensure compliance with state standards to successfully receive and maintain required licenses.
    • Maintain full enrollment; recruit new participants as necessary.
    • Conduct intake interviews with new participants and families.
    • Assess and collect fees in a timely manner; manage all aspects of budget management and billing.
    • Complete all required paperwork (BGCB and licensing agencies) in a timely manner.
    • Maintain current and complete files on all participants in accordance with EEC, DCF and Child Care Choices guidelines.
    • Implement SACC program according to EEC, DCF, Child Care Choices standards and guidelines as well as within the content of BGCB''s proposal submitted to and accepted by all licensing entities.
    • Coordinate all aspects of transportation and ensure safety of participants during travel.
    • Monitor the arrival and departure of SACC participants throughout the building as well as following up on unexpected/unexplained absences.
    • Facilitate weekly staff meetings to discuss administrative and programmatic issues.
    • Consult with the Social Worker regarding educational/social service plans for supportive care children; report on challenges or concerns, attend pre-placement conference for supportive care children when appropriate.
    • Orient, train and supervise department staff; ensure staff meet at EEC hours of training/professional development required each year.
    • Secure, maintain and monitor budget, materials, equipment and other resources belonging to the program area(s). Maintain a safe and clean program area(s).
    • Participate in individual and group supervision sessions; participate in professional development opportunities as appropriate.
    • Travel between sites and to activities as needed
    • Other related duties as specified by the Executive Director or his/her designee.
