    Position Summary:
    We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Phlebotomist - Full Time Days 5AM-1PM; rotating schedule/weekends - Lab. Procurement Dist. Admin..

    In this role, the successful candidate Under supervision performs routine phlebotomy and laboratory central receiving duties. Prepares specimens for send-outs to Reference Laboratories and results reports into the laboratory computer system.

    Job Responsibilities:

    1. Phlebotomy/Capillary Collection
    * Properly greets patient.
    * Properly identifies patient.
    * Prepares patient in an appropriate position.
    * Assembles appropriate material. (Tubes, gloves, etc.)
    * Selects appropriate tubes for tests ordered
    * Follows IC procedures (Gloves, Hand washing)
    * Follows order of draw in multiple specimen collection.
    * Performs proper site sterilization techniques (preparation)
    * Properly labels and documents tubes and label sets.
    * Knows appropriate site selection and exclusions (i.e. scarring, mastectomy)
    * Follows proper procedure for Blood Culture Collection.
    * Follows policies and procedures for sharp’s disposals.
    * Normal Draw technique
    * Finger stick technique
    * Heel stick technique
    * Butterfly technique
    * Keeps a clean, neat and professional working appearance
    * Keeps a clean, neat and professional working phlebotomy tray.
    * Patient left in a safe manner, bed rails up.
    * Performs EKGs correctly.
    2. Customer Service and Patient Care
    * Explains procedure and reassures patient.
    * Protects privacy of patient. (Closing curtains etc.)
    * Protects confidentiality of patient.
    * Refers question of patient to appropriate person. (i.e. Nursing, Supervisors)
    * Identifies any additional need of patient and acts accordingly.
    * Reports to supervisor or nursing any unusual condition of patient and document on label set and in computer
    * Prioritizing draws
    * Identifies his/herself, wears hospital ID badge and clarifies his/her role to patient in an understandable and respectful fashion.
    * May be required to draw outpatients at off-site locations. 
    3. Central Receiving (Specimen Processing)
    * Understands general computer operation for this area.
    * Prepares document in computer or deletion, addition or changes in order.
    * Properly documents all pertinent patient information.
    * Verifies and processes samples in an organized and timely fashion.
    * Delivers _Separately_ all STAT requests to sections.
    * Notes in computer any specimen integrity issues.
    * Relay to supervisor any conflict in specimen identification or labeling.
    * Handles equipment in accordance to laboratory policy.
    * Completes work or explains to coverage appropriate stage of processing and outstanding issues.
    * Identifies need for written (faxed) requests for patients results from non-staff physicians
    * Proper procedure for picking up samples from Ambulatory Surgery area
    * Knowledge of computer downtime procedure.
    * Ability to handle light stock.
    * Responsible to make sure adequate supplies are in the area.
    * Works collaboratively with other staff to maintain cleanliness of work environment and equipment. (ie. Carts, EKG machine).
    * Assists with prevention of transmission of infection by adhering to Standard Precautions as evidenced by effective handwashing techniques.
    * Recognizes safety hazards and acts promptly and appropriately.
    4. Reference Laboratory Sendouts
    * Organize work to complete in a timely fashion.
    * Understands process of lab necessary and specimen integrity.
    * Investigates unusual tests for proper collection and transport.
    * Identifies appropriate Reference Lab for analysis.
    * Notifies supervisor of unusual issues or specimens.
    * Directs to Pathologist requests requiring approval.
    * Informs coverage of appropriate stage of processing and any outstanding issues.
    * Able to transmit electronic orders
    * Knowledge of proper specimen submission to reference lab.
    * Knowledge of manual billing process for “Miscellaneous” reference tests.
    5. Resulting and Reporting
    * Properly faxes reports to Physician’s offices
    * Knows complete process for manual and electronic reporting.
    * Handles phone conversation in polite and complete manner
    * Notifies Supervisor of any unusual report, or phone request.
    * Distributes manual reports to appropriate location.
    * Assists in processing or outpatient area when necessary.
    6. Other Functions and Performance Expectations
    * Maintains a consistent pattern of attendance
    * Reports to assigned area on time for scheduled shift
    * Adheres to hospital/department dress code. Arrives to work appropriately dressed, well groomed and neat.
    * Completes all hospital requirements at designated times (i.e. annual assessment, educational, MedNetTra)
    * Conforms to policies regarding confidentiality of information.
    * Follows call-in procedure when sick, late or absent.
    7. Teamwork/Collaboration
    * Communicates in a fashion that respects the individuality and dignity of each person. Promotes dialogue that is hones and non-confrontational.
    * When there are disagreements regarding issues he/she will make a personal attempt to resolve the problem in a collaborative manner that promotes a successful encounter.
    * Demonstrates through his/her actions that the patient and/or departmental goals are a priority.
    * At all times employees will adhere to the CORE values of the hospital without exception
    

    Minimum Qualifications:
    To qualify you must have a High School diploma
    Phlebotomy Certificate Preferred or other Equivalent documentation and/or 5 years experience
    General Office skills (Typing, Filing, Phone)
    General Computer skills
    General Organizational Skills
    Knowledge of OSHA Regulations
    Knowledge of Standard precautions
    Must possess a valid drivers license

    Long Island Community Hospital provides a salary range to comply with the New York state Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $47,775.00 - $47,775.00 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.

  • Qualifications

    High school diploma or GED preferred, reading and writing ability at ninth-grade level required; supplemented by two (2) years of experience in and knowledge of the operating techniques of various cleaning machinery, tools and materials; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all members of the University community. Must be able to understand and follow through with oral and written instructions, and to work independently. Must be able to lift objects weighing as much as 50 lbs.
