  • Responsibilities

    Vaughn & Melton, a JMT Company, is currently seeking an Engineer-In-Training (EIT) for their Charlotte, North Carolina Office. Under close or moderate supervision, the successful candidate will perform engineering duties in planning, designing, and directing civil engineering projects such as roads, railroads, airports, bridges, channels, pipelines, site development, drainage, and water and sewage systems. SPONSORSHIP NOT AVAILABLE FOR THIS POSITION.

     

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Analyze survey reports, maps, drawings, blueprints, aerial photography, or other topographical or geologic data such as soil composition, terrain, and hydrological characteristics to plan and design project.
    • Calculates cost, quantities, and labor to determine project feasibility based on analysis of collected data.
    • Prepares reports, specifications, plans, construction schedules, environmental impact studies, and designs for projects. May also present public reports on topics such as bid proposals, deeds, or property and right-of-way descriptions.
    • Inspect project sites to monitor progress and ensure conformance to engineering plans, design specifications, construction, safety, or sanitation standards.
    • Compute load and grade requirements, water flow rates, or material stress factors to determine design specifications.
    • Conduct studies of traffic patterns or environmental conditions to identify engineering problems and assess potential project impact.
    • Uses computer assisted engineering and design software and equipment to plan and prepare engineering and design documents.

    Required Skills

    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, MicroStation and other design software
    • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
    • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations

    Required Experience

    • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a related field from ABET accredited engineering program
    • Engineer-in-training certification
    • 1-4 years of related experience

     

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    Work is performed in the field 95% of the time. Ability to extensively perform bending, kneeling, standing, shoveling, and lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 lbs. as needed. Work may be conducted outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions.

     

    Work is performed within a general office environment 5% of the time. Office work is generally sedentary in nature but may require occasional standing and walking. Lighting and temperature are adequate and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. within the office environment.
