Job Description
The Chief Quality Officer (“CQO”)/Vice President of Clinical Advancement and Patient Safety (“CAPS”) is a system-wide leadership role supporting Carilion Clinic’s strategic goals in the delivery of consistently high quality care, coordinated care with high value, and a highly safe organization. The CQO/VP CAPS is responsible for establishing Carilion Clinic’s Quality and CAPS vision, goals, and plan for the organization. S/he will lead improvements in clinical outcomes, clinical metrics and measurements, clinical risk management, patient advocacy, accreditation, and the overall value of clinical care. This position will provide the oversight for Carilion Clinic’s Quality and CAPS program and improvement plans. This key leader works with executives, management, physicians, and other staff to influence policy and goals in the best interests of Carilion Clinic. The CQO/VP CAPS ensures all actions taken and methods used are consistent with and promotes Carilion Clinic’s mission, vision, and values. This position reports to the Executive Vice President/Chief Medical Officer, and works collaboratively with leaders, physicians, and employees. The CQO/VP CAPs participating in clinical activity is preferred. JOB DUTIES: Oversees and drives the development and implementation of Carilion Clinic’s Quality and CAPs programs and goals; Prioritize clinical improvement and patient safety initiatives/projects aligned to support and achieve Carilion Clinic’s annual strategic goals and priorities; Serves as Carilion Clinic’s system-wide champion for the development and sustainability of a culture of quality and safety; Provides the leadership for the operations and performance of Carilion Clinic’s Quality and CAPS functions to ensure clinical quality is optimized ensuring financial sustainability; Identifies problems and barriers, and makes recommendations for improvement while monitoring performance; Regularly communicates about Quality and CAPS goals, programs, activities, and what is needed from the organization; Partners with Health Analytics to improve data and information capabilities regarding Quality and CAPS and champions a data-driven environment; Oversees and provides the leadership with developing annual operational and capital budgets, and ensures meets/beats financial targets; Builds strong relationships with the Board, executives, Chairs, Senior Management, and physicians/staff built upon mutual trust, open and honest communications, and integrity; Collaborates with Chairs, Medical Staff, Leaders to effectively plan, program, and oversee Carilion Clinic’s Quality and CAPS programs; Provides the leadership to improve effectiveness by creating and sustaining an environment of trust, accountability, ongoing communications with employees, creating opportunities for physicians and employees to contribute to initiatives, and connecting how physicians’ and employees’ work contributes to Quality and CAPS goals; Develops and sustains a talented, diverse, and action-oriented team recognized for responsiveness, innovation, outstanding performance, collaboration, and its ability to successfully implement change; Oversees the use of evidence-based guidelines, criteria and other clinical tools to reduce variation in clinical practice and to optimize clinical outcomes differentiating Carilion Clinic; Serves as the organization’s Patient Safety Officer, acting as the spokesperson for patient safety; Responsible for outcomes of government/accreditation audits related to Quality and CAPS, and develops and deploys improvement plans; Performs other duties as assigned.
