EXECUTIVE IN RESIDENCE, MATH TALENT SEARCH

    WHO WE ARE: CARINA INITIATIVES

Carina Initiatives is a philanthropic fund working to send more kids from more communities to the frontiers of science and technology. We see math as fundamental to future innovation; as such, we fund and support organizations that work to inspire, unearth, and train math talent.

The U.S. does not have a robust math talent system. One of the key issues with the talent system is the lack of a central organization that identifies and supports top math talent. We are going to change that.

We want to support the creation of an organization that identifies exceptional math talent at a young age and supports them in achieving exceptional outcomes by providing extraordinary scholarships and individualized coaching.

The mission of this organization is simple: identify the top math talent in every zip code and work closely with them and their families from elementary to high school to ensure they are on the path to becoming world-class talents.

    THE ROLE

We are looking for an experienced executive to join the Carina team as an Executive in Residence (EIR) to set the vision for and build a plan for this math talent organization. The EIR will have 6-12 months to explore the opportunity space and present a robust roadmap for the creation of this organization. This is a full-time position reporting to the President.

Once approved by Carina, Carina will provide initial funding and assistance for the EIR to found the new nonprofit organization. Carina is willing to commit $5M annually and will support the founding team in raising additional funds to achieve full scale.

Carina expects that at scale, this organization will work with roughly 5,000 (500 in each grade) of the top math students in the country and that these students will be highly geographically diverse.

Carina expects that this new organization will engage in 3 key activities: 1) recruitment and identification of students, 2) scholarship and financial aid, and 3) coaching and community building.

    1. Recruitment and identification - Partner with curriculum companies, teachers' associations, testing organizations, and math communities to identify early outliers (3rd grade) in math achievement.
    2. Scholarships - Provide students who are accepted with all the funds they need to attend the best math educational programs in the country, all the way through college.
    3. Coaching and community - Pair coaches with scholars to develop strong relationships with the scholars and their families and help them navigate the math ecosystem, and welcome scholars into a broader math community.
