    POSITION TITLE: Reproductive Health Medical Assistant

    GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

    The Reproductive Health Medical Assistant supports all aspects of sexual and reproductive health clinical services across multiple clinics focused on contraceptive care, counseling and testing, prenatal care, and other reproductive health priority areas. This Medical Assistant will report directly to the Reproductive Health Nurse Manager to facilitate all aspects of specialty clinics, assist with triage and scheduling of reproductive health patients, and conduct documentation and tracking for key reproductive health quality measures. The Reproductive Health Medical Assistant will also conduct community outreach, support educational groups/initiatives, and provide education and counseling to help individuals make informed decisions regarding sexual and reproductive health

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    • Oral and written fluency in English (fluency in another language a plus, such as Spanish, Arabic, Russian, Vietnamese, or Nepali).
    • Holds Medical Assistant certificate.
    • Prior training or certification in contraceptive care, pregnancy options counseling, sexually transmitted infection (STI) management, LGBTQ+ health, and/or domestic violence advocacy preferred. Completion of “Basic Family Planning'' training through ABCD Family Planning Training Institute (or completion of training within first three months of hire) required.
    • At least two years of experience supporting direct patient care; experience in complex care, adolescent, or reproductive health settings will be highly prioritized.
    • Ability to provide unbiased, comprehensive, and supportive information and care regarding pregnancy testing and options counseling, including abortion, adoption, and parenting; STI testing, counseling, and prevention; contraception and contraceptive counseling; fertility counseling and referrals; and sexual orientation and gender identity.
    • Prior experience in sterile technique, vaccine protocol, LARC visit protocol, and gynecological procedure protocol strongly preferred.
    • Experience (or strong interest/willingness) in facilitating group-based health education and community outreach activities.
    • Ability to independently and effectively balance and prioritize personal daily tasks, including clinical visit schedules, clinic operations management, educational programming, and case management.
    • Ability to listen actively, demonstrate responsiveness to team needs/requests, and integrate feedback thoughtfully and promptly.
    • High reliability and commitment to adhere to designated work hours/tasks.
    • Ability to respond to provider and team requests in a timely manner.
    • Ability to demonstrate cultural sensitivity with staff, teams, patients, stakeholders, and partners representing diverse cultures, ethnicities, sexual orientations, gender identities, socioeconomic statuses, educational backgrounds, worldviews, literacy levels, and languages.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and Google Workspace (Email, Calendar, Drive, Docs, Sheets, and Slides) applications.
    • Utmost discretion and compliance with state, federal, and internal policies when handling confidential patient information.
    • Personal transportation and flexibility to travel daily, often spontaneously, to multiple primary care sites to provide patient care, clinical support, or administrative support as needed.
    • Flexibility to attend out-of-town trainings, conferences, and outreach on occasional evenings and weekends.

    PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

    • Collaborate with cross-departmental leadership on the implementation, management, and ongoing quality improvement of reproductive health specialty clinics and associated clinical services (e.g., contraceptive care, GYN/women’s health, prenatal care, STI counseling and testing, LGBTQ+ health, adolescent health).

    • Assist providers and contracted specialists before, during, and after specialty clinics.

    • Assist in the management of reproductive health inventory, medications, and contraceptive supplies, including:

      • Train new Medical Assistants in LARC procedure protocol, sterile technique, supply management, sterilization/autoclaving, and invoicing.
      • Conduct audits/monitoring to ensure accurate documentation of medications and devices by clinical teams.
      • Monitor utilization and place orders accordingly.
      • Coordinate utilization among Provider teams.
      • Stock exam rooms, waiting areas, and pharmacy with contraceptives and literature.
      • Transport supplies, LARCS, and any reproductive health materials to all three sites at any given time.
    • Support departmental leadership (e.g., grant teams, quality improvement teams) with quality improvement activities related to reproductive health, including:

      • Collaborate with Pediatric Immunization Medical Assistant to track and contact (monthly) patients due for HPV immunization.
      • Collaborate with Reproductive Health Community Health Worker on tracking and scheduling of patients for breast and cervical cancer screening.
      • Collaborate with Population Health Coordinators to track prenatal/pregnancy outcome data.
      • Track positive STI results and coordinate follow-up counseling for patients with repeated positive results.
      • Track and schedule patients due for 3-month post-contraception counseling, string checks, or implant evaluations.
    • Assist Reproductive Health Nurse Manager with recruitment and facilitation of educational groups.

    • Maintain collection of reproductive health literature, community resources, and educational tools at all primary care sites.

    • Occasionally conduct community outreach to promote utilization of reproductive health services by patients/potential patients, including at local WIC sites, health fairs, and other public engagements.

    • Occasionally collaborate with champion care teams to conduct outreach clinical services from health center’s mobile van to expand access to reproductive health services in at-risk areas.

    • Develop effective partnerships with and assist a team of ~15 champion Providers, Nurses, Community Health Workers, Medical Assistants, and contracted specialists across three primary care sites.

    • Manage program internal referrals, inbaskets, emails, phone calls, and voicemails. Strategically triage, screen, book, and manage all reproductive health patients for visits with appropriately credentialed clinicians and contracted specialists to meet same-day visit needs, ensure fulfillment of provider skill maintenance requirements, and ensure fulfillment of provider preceptor/observation requirements.

    • Triage patients to determine sexual and reproductive health needs and coordinate appropriate care between Providers, external/contracted specialists, Nurses, Medical Assistants, Community Health Workers, and external agencies or resources. Provide triage/scheduling of urgent/same-day reproductive health visits and assist in management of Reproductive Health Nurse schedule.

    • Coordinate with front end, switchboard, check-out, triage, and clinical teams to capture and schedule patients appropriately.

    • Provide patient care in accordance with Medical Assistant guidelines, including:

      • In accordance with CDC Quality Family Planning Guidelines, provide evidence-based counseling, risk assessment, and harm reduction to all clients requesting service, including information and referrals regarding reproductive health and anatomy; human sexuality, sexual orientation, and gender identity; contraceptive methods and safe sex practices; pregnancy testing and options counseling, including abortion, adoption, and parenting; prevention and testing of HIV/AIDS and STIs; fertility counseling and referrals; violence prevention and intervention; healthy relationship and communication skills; and other medical and social needs as requested.
      • Perform point-of-care testing (urinalysis, hCG, strep, Hgb, finger stick blood glucose); check vital signs; perform tympanometry and cardiography.
      • Draw, perform and/or collect all lab specimens, ensuring specimen integrity. Record completed lab work in daily logs, and complete correct lab requisition according to insurance/grant.
    • Record weekly spore count for autoclave maintenance,

    • Conduct daily pre-visit planning and proactive outreach to Providers to increase reproductive health panels and capture patients that may benefit from counseling.

    • Continuously attend trainings, conferences, and professional development activities; maintain familiarity and compliance with trends, best practices, recommendations, and requirements produced by CDC Quality Family Planning Guidelines, Massachusetts Department of Public Health, ABCD Family Planning Training Institute, Baystate Wesson Women’s Clinic, and other subject matter experts.

    WORKING CONDITIONS:
