2021-2022 Dean of Students & School Culture
POSITION SUMMARY
Accountable to the Principal, the Dean of Students and School Culture ensures a school culture that promotes student achievement and social growth in a college preparatory environment along with ensuring that Carmen High School of Science and Technology's mission, vision and core values are internalized as evidenced by student actions and behaviors. Through advisories, retreats, and day-to day interaction, the Dean supports teachers and students' advisors to ensure that as many students are promoted to the next grade level as possible and that 100% of students meet/exceed community service expectations each year. Additionally, the Dean reinforces Carmen's aspirational and constructive environment; tracks and responds to behavior support and culture data; plans and implements professional development to support classroom culture and staff; maintains a consistent presence; plans and leads events; participates with other Carmen Schools deans in the network Culture Collaborative, and meets or exceeds all school-wide culture goals.
QUALIFICATIONS
At least 3 years teaching experience with at least 1 year in leadership role
WI DPI certification or eligibility
Bachelor's Degree in education or related field
Oral Spanish speaking skills preferred
Knowledge and skills in creating a learning environment that strives for college readiness and high student achievement
Leadership skills and ability
Knowledge, skills and ability in effective student behavior, interventions and classroom management
Passion for high quality education and student achievement
Ability to lead and function in an entrepreneurial, fast-paced environment with a mature approach to challenges
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
∙ Models the Carmen Schools mission, vision, and core values
∙ In collaboration with Directors of Curriculum and Instruction (DoCIs), provides professional development to staff and students
∙ Participates in and contributes to the school-based Leadership Team
∙ Participates in and contributes to the Carmen Schools network-wide Culture Collaborative
∙ Assists the Principal in recruiting and planning for site-based School Improvement Committee meetings
∙ Adheres to the policies and procedures of Carmen High School of Science and Technology
∙ Takes on other duties and responsibilities as assigned
∙ Designs and implements programs, policies, practices and resources that build character development for students and staff
∙ Helps to create a school culture that is in line with Carmen's mission and vision by building intentional systems and structures (i.e. character development programs)
∙ Maintains accurate student behavior supportrecords, documenting all conferences, interventions, actions to support student behavior, and parent contacts
∙ Ensures that staff consistently support student behavior, both proactively and reactively, in line with school policies
∙ Invests students, staff and families in behavioral expectations and student achievement
∙ Fosters an environment and culture which promotes learning, respect and responsibility
∙ Works in collaboration with School Social Worker to provide crisis interventions as needed
∙ Assists Principal in greeting students every day at the main entrance
∙ Leads the site-based Response to Intervention (RtI) Team and facilitates record-keeping and facilitation of Tier 1, 2, and 3 interventions
∙ Collaborates with teachers and student support staff on resources and services for student RtI referrals
∙ Trains and supports staff in grade checks, student engagement, and parent involvement
∙ Communicates with stakeholders – including but not limited to student advisors, parents, the Principal and Chief Schools Officer – regarding student behaviors that require attention or interventions
∙ Works in collaboration with the School Social Worker to provide crisis interventions as needed
∙ Advocates for students' individual learning needs in collaboration with lead special education teacher
∙ Keeps staff and students apprised of situations needing attention or intervention
∙ Tracks and analyzes student data relative to attendance, GPA, eligibility for graduation and summer school, advisory, community service and then identifies interventions for improvement
∙ Creates a college readiness culture guided by the school's mission, vision and belief statements and employing character traits, and other implementation tools
∙ Collaborates with the Carmen Schools network leadership team to identify and adapt research-based practices as appropriate
∙ Creates and administers various surveys to capture student and staff feedback as needed
∙ Supports the DoCIs in all school-wide testing logistics and coordination and partners with Network Leaders to ensure 100% fidelity in this area
o Provides direction and supervision to teachers as it relates to student behaviors and achievement
o Observes teachers and participates in performance feedback with teachers, Directors of Curriculum and Instruction, and Principal
∙ Covers classrooms for teachers from time to time, as needed
∙ Leads the advisory program and provides guidance to the Advisory Leads
∙ Coordinates with the Carmen Schools network culture lead to ensure site-based advisory program aligns with network-wide expectations
∙ Coordinates the student retreat program, helps lead retreats, and trains other staff to lead retreats
∙ Facilitates the Retreat Committee
∙ Oversees the Community Service program
∙ Ensures the school is properly implementing the Carmen academic support structures
∙ Supports the advisors in being effective in the delivery of the advisory program
∙ Supports advisory goals including planning site-based professional development in
coordination with network-wide professional development, gradebook consistency, teacher-leader support, etc.
∙ Designs and implements programs, policies, practices and resources that implement Carmen network expectations around character development
∙ Regularly conducts appraisals on the advisory program to ensure alignment with objectives
∙ Observes and coaches advisory leads & advisors and participates in advisor evaluations three times per year
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Dean of Students & School Culture coaches all instructional staff directly or indirectly.
