Carpe Data harnesses the power of emerging and alternative data for insurance carriers around the globe. Through access to continuous monitoring and predictive scoring, insurers gain deeper insight into risks in real-time which can significantly enhance many aspects of the insurance life cycle including underwriting, claims, and book assessment.

    Carpe Data is located in the heart of downtown Santa Barbara. All Carpe Data employees are currently working from home due to the COVID-19 pandemic with plans to continue to do so until around Summer 2021. This role will be recruited virtually and this position will start remote until our office reopens safely. Candidates must be located in Santa Barbara or willing to relocate to Santa Barbara once our office reopens.

    What you Will Do As a Data Analyst, you will have the opportunity to work within Carpe Data’s cutting edge Big Data pipeline, with a focus on data ingestion. This crucial role will place you at the beginning of the pipeline where your data analysis and mapping recommendations will drive the rest of the team’s ability to build high quality data products. In this role, you will be asked to evaluate large datasets quantitatively and qualitatively, while also creatively applying your knowledge of our internal data schema and product goals to understand how the data should be reflected in the subsequent pipeline steps. You will work closely with data analysts, developers and product stakeholders, and should enjoy a fast-paced, fun and collaborative environment.

    Responsibilities

    • Evaluate large datasets for dimensions such as quality, completeness and accuracy
    • Recognize patterns within our datastore
    • Write JIRA tickets to communicate requirements to developers
    • Determine product impact for data quality issues
    • Recommend creative approaches to structuring and manipulating new data within our internal data schema
    • Drive efficiency and automation throughout our Data Ingestion process
    • Augment existing data assessment techniques such as data profiling
    • Identify and suggest product and process improvements, including creating scripts to automate certain processes
    • Exploratory projects where you are given a broad hypothesis and are asked to arrive at a conclusion

    Skills and Experience for Success in This Role

    • Proficiency with SQL and familiarity with any leading database software

    • Experience with ETL processes and Big Data pipelines

    • Experience in large dataset assessments

    • Thorough understanding of all complex data types - structs, arrays, etc

    • Detail-oriented, analytical, and patient

    • Self-motivated to explore and undertake new projects

    • Familiarity with any of the following technologies is a plus: Excel, Kibana, Tableau, Snowflake, AWS, or like solutions

    • Scala/Java/Python programming is a plus

    • Experience with orchestrated data pipelines is a plus

    • Statistics, Math or Engineering relevant coursework is preferred, but all majors are welcome to apply
