Boston, MA

JOIN CARTWHEEL TO HELP TACKLE THE STUDENT MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS.

Kids spend most of their days in the classroom, and teachers and school counselors, who play a vital role in supporting students, are often the first to notice when something is off. But with 1 in 5 young people struggling with mental health, schools are getting crushed by a downward spiral in student crises and staff burnout.

With large increases in federal funding for schools and the rise of telehealth, schools are reimagining what mental health support can look like – and Cartwheel is their trusted mental health partner providing direct care through telehealth and wraparound support for school staff, students, and families. We see our role as empowering school counselors, psychologists, and social workers who see kids every single day. Instead of going around them, we collaborate with them. This leads to rapid access to care for students, higher student and family engagement, stronger collaboration among the trusted adults in a student’s life, and better clinical outcomes.

We believe kids shouldn't just aspire to get out of bed and drag themselves to class. They should be able to experience joy. They deserve to envision and build a life they’re excited to live. If you join Cartwheel, you’ll help make this vision a reality for millions of students across the country. We’re backed by top investors including General Catalyst, BoxGroup, and Able Partners, and we're looking for scrappy, mission-driven teammates to join our team.

    ABOUT THE ROLE

Since our founding last spring, we’ve grown to serve more than a dozen school districts in our home state of Massachusetts, providing care to hundreds of students and families. This upcoming school year, we’ll be working with several dozen districts across 3-5 states, providing care to thousands of students and families.

As HEAD OF CARE OPERATIONS, your mission will be to strengthen and scale Cartwheel’s provision of mental health services and wraparound supports for students, families, and school staff across these geographies. In doing so, you will lay the foundation for Cartwheel to become the trusted mental health partner for schools nationwide.

    WHO YOU’LL BE WORKING WITH

You’ll work closely with DANIEL (COO), JULIANA (Medical Director), and JOE (CEO). You’ll also partner with our PRODUCT AND ENGINEERING TEAM and our CARE TEAM to design tools, features, and process improvements that make our users’ lives easier.

    WHO YOU ARE

    • You have experience in health care operations, ideally in a fast-growing virtual/hybrid care model. You may have developed and rolled out standard operating procedures, opened new locations, and trained on-the-ground teams.
    • You pride yourself on achieving results and aren’t afraid to get your hands dirty
    • You thrive in a lean startup environment. You should not expect to bring in a team of managers/associates right off the bat. Over time, you’ll build a team and have significant autonomy over what that looks like, but you should expect to be scrappy.
    • You want to build for communities traditionally overlooked by digital health – uninsured and underinsured families, youth in foster care, English learners, recent immigrants, etc.
    • You have experience collaborating cross-functionally, in particular across operations, product, engineering, and/or clinical teams
    • You’re comfortable with data-driven decision-making
    • You’re passionate about our mission to tackle the youth mental health crisis!

    WHAT YOU’LL DO

    • REFINE, MONITOR, AND ANALYZE METRICS TO UNDERSTAND CARTWHEEL’S OPERATIONAL PERFORMANCE. You’ll dig into and act on questions like:
      • How quickly are we getting students into care? Are they engaging?
      • How much variation do we see by school district? Why?
      • How well are we matching students to credentialed clinicians?
      • How satisfied are students, families, and school staff with our services?
    • ENGAGE DIRECTLY WITH ON THE GROUND TEAMS TO MAKE THEIR LIVES EASIER. This includes building scalable processes for getting feedback from care coordinators, clinicians, and school staff; identifying root causes; and developing action plans.
    • SEQUENCE OPERATIONAL IMPROVEMENTS IN RELATION TO OUR STRATEGY AND PRODUCT ROADMAP, collaborating across ops, clinical, product and engineering.
    • DESIGN AND ROLL OUT IMPROVEMENTS QUICKLY WHILE ACCOUNTING FOR THE NEEDS OF COMPETING STAKEHOLDERS. For example, how can we scale to new districts while maintaining trust and connection with all school districts? How can we improve internal processes quickly without burdening our team with too many changes at once?
    • EXAMPLES OF EARLY PROJECTS YOU LEAD COULD INCLUDE:
      • Shortening time to a student’s first visit with a Cartwheel therapist (for example, by optimizing initial outreach and information collection processes)
      • Understanding which students are likely to face challenges engaging in care and redirecting resources to remove barriers for those students
      • Improving processes for connecting students to other care beyond Cartwheel

Please apply even if you don't meet all of the criteria -- we’d still love to hear from you. You may be a great fit!

LOCATION: Remote with quarterly in-person team retreats and co-locating as needed in Boston or NYC, especially as we get to know each other.

    START DATE: April-May 2023

COMPENSATION: The salary range for this position is $125,000 to $175,000. Compensation is commensurate with experience, and we’ll consider a higher band for a more senior candidate.
