As part of an ongoing multi-partner effort to reconceptualize and re-design fisheries and ecosystem monitoring in the Hudson River, we invite applications for a postdoctoral researcher. The successful applicant will analyze large existing long-term data sets and new experimental results, in close collaboration with colleagues from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC), Cornell University, the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies, Stony Brook University, and other organizations. These analyses will support decisions by NYSDEC, the Mid-Atlantic and New England Fishery Management Councils, the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission, and others about future monitoring and management of the Hudson River ecosystem and its diverse diadromous and freshwater fisheries.

Applicants should have excellent quantitative and data skills and a commitment to natural resource management. A strong background in fisheries science and management is highly desirable, as is experience with analyses of time series, spatial, mark-recapture, telemetry, and other typical fisheries data sets. Knowledge of large river estuaries or other aquatic ecosystems is also a plus. Applicants should be collaborative and self-motivated, with the ability to thrive working alone and with a small team. In addition to data analysis, job duties will include writing reports and peer-reviewed manuscripts and presenting results to stakeholders, scientists, and other audiences.

The researcher will be based at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies in Millbrook, New York, and will spend office time there and also with the NYSDEC Division of Marine Resources, Hudson and Delaware Fisheries Unit, in New Paltz, New York. These work locations provide access to vibrant research and management communities with expertise in fisheries science and management, aquatic ecosystems, data science, and related fields. We strongly prefer to hire someone who would be based in the area, but would consider remote work in exceptional circumstances. This is a salaried, exempt, full-time, benefited position, with a starting salary in the range of $70,000 to $85,020, depending on the number of years post-PhD. Funding for the position is secured for a period of at least 3 years; the initial appointment would be for two years, but could be extended upon satisfactory performance. We would like the successful applicant to start work as soon as possible, but the starting date is negotiable. All candidates must be authorized to work in the U.S.
