The Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies invites applications for assistant, associate, or senior-level scientists as part of a multi-year initiative to hire creative, collaborative and synthetic scientists to complement research strengths at the Cary Institute (e.g., in forest, freshwater, disease, urban, and global change ecology). Successful candidates may focus on systems that range from microbes to landscapes and should address ecological issues relevant to current environmental and societal challenges. Example areas of research may include, but are not limited to, microbial ecology, ecosystem consequences of climate change, and the role of evolution in ecological response to global change (e.g., climate, land-use, pollution). We embrace a diversity of ideas and approaches.

The Cary Institute is one of the world's leading independent ecological research institutions, located in Millbrook, NY. We are a private, non-profit organization employing 14-16 full-time PhD scientists, as well as postdoctoral researchers and professional staff. We also host dozens of graduate students and visiting and adjunct scientists. The Institute is situated on 1,000 hectares in the scenic Hudson Valley and is within 150 km from New York City, Albany, and the Catskill Mountains. Cary scientists have 12-month appointments and no formal teaching requirements, although many scientists choose to mentor and teach undergraduate and graduate students and may contribute to the Cary Institute's January-term course.

Successful candidates should have demonstrated experience generating external funding and a strong record of publishing in peer-review journals. Candidates from underrepresented groups are particularly encouraged to apply. Questions about the position may be directed to members of the search committee: Shannon LaDeau (Chair), Sarah Batterman, and Rick Ostfeld. Review of applications will begin on 1 September 2019 and will continue until the position is filled. The anticipated start date is Spring 2020.
