JOB PURPOSE: 

Bring Cary Institute science to K-12 students and educators and help advance the field of ecology education.

LOCATION:

Cary Institute of Ecosystems Study, Millbrook, NY

START DATE AND DURATION:

This is a full time, long-term position in the Cary Institute Education Program. Start date 1 April 2020, with an earlier start (on or after 6 January 2020) preferred.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:  

Develop, promote and lead innovative programs for K-12 students at Cary Institute and at schools, helping foster ecological and data literacy, and the application of ecology to real ecosystems and environmental issues.

• Develop, promote and lead professional development programs for teachers and other educators.
• Develop and revise curriculum materials for middle and high school students and teachers, and disseminate and support implementation of these through programs and the website.
• Assure alignment of programs and curriculum materials with national, state and district standards.
• Contribute to research about ecology teaching and learning, helping collect and analyze data and write papers based on this work.
• Connect Cary Institute science and education to local, regional and national communities of science and environmental education practitioners and researchers.
• Help the Institute explore new programs in Citizen Science that would build on and contribute to Cary Institute science.
• Manage budgets and supervise personnel.
• Write grant proposals for programs as part of the Institute's education mission.

Program Assistants and Specialists, Project Assistants, Camp Instructors, Interns

QUALIFICATIONS:     

REQUIRED

• Bachelor's degree in one of the environmental science, or in education.
• Coursework in ecology.
• Ecology teaching experience with school children and the public.
• Experience developing science curriculum for middle and/or high school students. 
• Ability to communicate and work with a wide range scientists, educators and members of the public.
• Excellent writing and organizational skills.
• Must be able to work periodic weekends and evenings (usually one night and one weekend per month).

PREFERRED

• Master's degree in one of the environmental science, or in education.
• Coursework in education.
• Experience helping lead professional develop programs with teachers.
• Classroom teaching experience in science with middle or high school students.

This is a full-time, exempt, fully benefited position. Candidates must be authorized to work in the U.S. Finalist candidates will be subject to background checks.
