Cary Institute is accepting applications for an Ecology Education Program Specialist to bring Cary Institute science to secondary school students and educators and help advance the field of ecology education.

START DATE AND DURATION: This is a full time, long term position in the Cary Institute Education Program. Start date before the end of January, 2023, preferred, with a later start date possible.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Coordinate the Mid-Hudson Young Environmental Scientists (MH-YES) Program for local high school students. This entails:

• Promote the program to recruit a diverse group of students and mentor (undergraduates, teachers, scientists).
• Plan and organize all program activities, including orientations, trainings, research work (field and lab), and evaluation.
• Support mentors before and during the program.
• Serve as the on-site coordinator every day during the 3 week program.
• Write reports and proposals to document and support the program.

Coordinate the Hudson Data Jam competition. This entails:

•  Promote the program to students and educators throughout the Hudson Valley.
•  Update and maintain the website and all associated resources – datasets, supporting materials and forms.
•  Provide virtual and in-school workshops and one-on-one support to participating educators, advisors and students.
• Recruit judges and coordinate project judging and awards.
• Evaluate and document the program and its outcomes.
• Write reports and proposals to document and support the program.

Develop, promote and help lead professional development programs for regional teachers and other educators.

Develop and revise curriculum materials for middle and high school students and teachers, and disseminate and support implementation of these through programs and the website.

Assure alignment of programs and curriculum materials with national, state and district standards.

Contribute to research about ecology teaching and learning, helping collect and analyze data and write papers based on this work.

Connect Cary Institute science and education to local, regional and national communities of science and environmental education practitioners and researchers.

Help manage budgets and supervise seasonal personnel.

Help write grant proposals for programs as part of the Institute's education mission.

SUPERVISES: Program Assistants. Project Assistants, Interns

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor's degree in one of the environmental sciences, or in education.
• Coursework in ecology.
• At least two years of ecology or related teaching experience
• Experience developing science curriculum for middle and/or high school students. 
• Ability to communicate and work with a wide range scientists, educators and members of the public.
• Excellent writing and organizational skills.
• Must be able to work periodic weekends and evenings (usually one night and one weekend per month).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Master's degree in one of the environmental science, or in education.
• Coursework in education.
• Experience teaching ecology to secondary school students (middle or high school).
• Experience helping lead professional develop programs with teachers.
• Classroom teaching experience in science with middle or high school students.
