About the Opportunity
Augustine Angels is seeking an experienced Catholic Mass Music Director/Musician to provide musical leadership for the 11:00 AM Catholic Mass at Langley Air Force Base Chapel, one of the largest Catholic communities in the U.S. Air Force.
This role is ideal for a skilled liturgical musician who values reverence, tradition, and congregational participation and is comfortable serving in a military chapel environment.
Key Responsibilities
• Provide musical leadership for weekly Sunday Masses and special liturgical services • Select and prepare liturgically appropriate Catholic music in coordination with the Catholic Priest • Lead congregational singing and provide organ or keyboard accompaniment • Direct and rehearse volunteer choir members, cantors, and instrumentalists • Schedule and conduct rehearsals (minimum 60 minutes, held in advance) • Recruit, train, and communicate with choir members and cantors • Coordinate closely with the Catholic Priest and chapel staff • Ensure compliance with Catholic liturgical guidelines and copyright licensing (OneLicense, public domain music, etc.) • Provide or coordinate an approved substitute when unavailable (with advance notice)
Required Qualifications
✔ Bachelor’s degree in Music or equivalent experience in Catholic liturgical music ✔ Demonstrated experience serving as a Catholic church musician (Mass setting required) ✔ Proficiency in organ or keyboard accompaniment ✔ Strong vocal leadership and ability to lead congregational singing ✔ Ability to read, teach, and sight-read music ✔ Experience working with choirs, cantors, and volunteer musicians ✔ Familiarity with Catholic liturgy, Mass structure, and sacred music traditions ✔ Professional demeanor and ability to work within a military chapel environment
Preferred (but not required): • Experience with pipe organ (1934 M.P. Möller organ on site) • Familiarity with Gregorian chant and sacred polyphony
Security & Compliance Requirements
• Ability to pass a background investigation (NACI) • Completion of VIRTUS training prior to start • Ability to obtain base access credentials • Compliance with base security and safety requirements
💰 Compensation Compensation is paid on a per-service basis (not hourly). Rates apply to each Sunday Mass, rehearsal, and approved special service. Preparation and planning time are included in the per-service rate. Approximately 124 paid services/rehearsals annually. Competitive compensation based on experience.
This position is structured as a contract (1099) role.
