    Position Title: Controller

    Reports To: Senior VP of Finance and Accounting

    FLSA Status: Exempt

    Direct Reports: 10+ Accounting Associates

    POSITION SUMMARY

    The Controller is responsible for leading all day-to-day accounting activities for Cedarhurst Senior Living. In that capacity, the Controller will be primarily responsible for leading and managing the accounting department, including the financial performance and reporting for all operating communities, managing accounts payable and receivable, as well as the strategy behind Cedarhurst Senior Living’s accounting growth. In these capacities, the Controller will work closely with the President, Senior Vice President of Finance and Accounting and Director of Financial Planning and Analysis.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    • Manages all accounting functions including monthly financial performance, oversight of maintenance of general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable and cash receipts for each operating community.

    • Oversee communication, preparation and filing of necessary corporate and community related annual tax returns with third party accounting firm. Responsible for communication with appropriate investors regarding related K-1s.

    • Provide input as necessary to Director of FP&A for preparation of budgets and forecasts for each community under management.

    • Primarily responsible for overseeing the preparation of monthly financial packets for each community under management and presenting monthly packages to appropriate parties.

    • Primarily responsible for monthly closing of financial records including all reconciliations and necessary analyses.

    • Develop and oversee internal control policies, guidelines, and procedures.

    • Create, implement and oversee accounting control systems, policies and procedures.

    • Ensure compliance with federal, state and other governmental agencies and make recommendations to accounting processes as needed.

    • Maintain current knowledge of organizational policies and procedures, federal and state policies and directives, and current accounting standards.

    • Monitor and evaluate the performance of accounting and other financial staff, recommending and implementing personnel actions, such as promotions and terminations, as well as the hiring of appropriate personnel.

    • Develop and maintain relationships with banking, insurance, and nonorganizational accounting personnel to facilitate financial activities.

    • Special projects assigned by the Senior Vice President of Finance and Accounting.

    EXPERIENCE & SKILLS:

    • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or other related field, Master’s degree preferred.

    • Minimum 5 years’ hands on experience with federal, state and local payroll tax filings.

    • Demonstrated understanding of general ledger analysis.

    • Language Ability - Reads and interprets documents. Ability to write reports and correspondence

    o Written Communication - Writes clearly and informatively; able to read and interpret written information.

    o Verbal Communication - Talks to others to convey information effectively.

    o English Language - Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.

    • Must have the ability to remain calm in stressful situations, to be flexible, to work well with many interruptions and be able to multi-task.

    • Detailed problem solver with ability to work within tight deadlines.

    • Strong technical proficiency working in complex systems with a thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office applications; including, but not limited to Excel and Word.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers and phones. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This job also requires punctuality, attentiveness in meetings and the cognitive ability to retain information from multiple sources. Finally, this position requires the ability to occasionally lift office products and supplies, up to 20 pounds.

    POSITION TYPE / EXPECTED WORK

    This is a full-time position, and business hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Longer hours, evenings and weekend work will be necessary at times.

    TRAVEL

    This position does not require regular travel away from the home office.
