ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW
Across The Life Span, PLLC (ATLS) is an integrated behavioral health, primary care, and opioid addiction treatment organization serving Caswell County and surrounding North Carolina communities under NC Medicaid. ATLS is deeply committed to recovery-oriented, person-centered care that respects lived experience as a powerful asset in supporting community healing.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS) is a trained professional who uses their own personal lived experience of mental health recovery, substance use recovery, or both, to provide hope, advocacy, and practical support to individuals currently navigating their own recovery journey. The CPSS is an integral member of the ATLS clinical team, working alongside Qualified Professionals, licensed clinicians, and medical staff to deliver peer-based services across our Yanceyville, Roxboro, and Greensboro service areas.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Peer Support Services
Provide individual peer support to consumers using a strengths-based, person-centered, and trauma-informed approach grounded in shared lived experience
Assist individuals in identifying personal recovery goals, building natural support networks, and developing individualized wellness and crisis management plans (including WRAP — Wellness Recovery Action Plans)
Model recovery, self-determination, and hope through consistent, authentic peer engagement
Support consumers in navigating community systems including mental health services, substance use treatment, housing, employment, and benefits
Accompany consumers to appointments, hearings, and community activities as appropriate
Facilitate or co-facilitate peer support groups, recovery education workshops, and community engagement activities
Provide outreach to individuals who are disengaged or at risk of disengaging from behavioral health services
Integrated Team Collaboration
Work collaboratively within the ATLS multidisciplinary team, including QPs, licensed clinicians, NPs, and MAT/OAT program staff
Communicate relevant consumer updates, concerns, and safety observations to the Clinical Services Manager and supervising QP in a timely manner
Participate in team meetings, case conferences, clinical supervision, and training activities
Support individuals enrolled in opioid addiction treatment programs by offering peer-based recovery support, destigmatization, and motivational engagement
Assist with transition planning for individuals moving between levels of care
Documentation & Compliance
Complete all required service documentation in the EHR within established ATLS timeframes, including peer support progress notes and service logs
Document peer support services in compliance with NC Medicaid Peer Support Services definitions and billing requirements
Maintain documentation consistent with HIPAA, ATLS policies, and the NC Peer Support Specialist Code of Ethics
Participate in internal quality audits and support the QA/QI Officer with peer services compliance
Accurately record units of service and complete billing documentation per NC Medicaid standards
Professional Development & Ethics
Maintain active NC Peer Support Specialist Certification, including required continuing education hours for renewal
Adhere at all times to the NC Peer Support Specialist Code of Ethics and ATLS professional conduct standards
Engage in reflective practice and individual supervision to support professional growth
Maintain clear and appropriate boundaries in all peer relationships
Complete all ATLS-required annual training including trauma-informed care, cultural humility, and mandatory reporting
Fulfill mandatory reporting obligations per NC General Statutes
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Current, active North Carolina Peer Support Specialist (NC PSS) Certification issued by the NC PSS Certification Board
Personal lived experience of mental health recovery, substance use recovery, or co-occurring disorder recovery — as a current consumer or person in long-term recovery
High school diploma or GED
Valid North Carolina driver's license and reliable personal transportation
Ability to pass criminal background check and pre-employment screenings
Basic computer literacy and ability to learn electronic health record documentation
Strong interpersonal communication skills and commitment to recovery-oriented values
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience providing peer support in a community behavioral health, substance use treatment, or integrated care setting
Completion of WRAP (Wellness Recovery Action Plan) Facilitator training
Experience with NC Medicaid Peer Support Services billing and documentation
Familiarity with Motivational Interviewing principles
Experience supporting individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders
Bilingual or multilingual communication abilities a plus
WORK ENVIRONMENT & CONDITIONS
This is a community-based position requiring regular travel across Caswell, Person, and Guilford Counties. The CPSS will work in a variety of settings including consumer homes, community locations, and ATLS clinical offices in Yanceyville, Roxboro, and Greensboro. A valid driver's license and dependable personal transportation are required; mileage reimbursement is provided per ATLS policy.
