    Job Description

The Chan Zuckerberg Biohub ("CZ Biohub) is an independent nonprofit medical research organization based in the San Francisco Bay Area. The Chan Zuckerberg Biohub supports scientific research to cure, prevent or manage disease in our childrens lifetime. Our mission is to understand the fundamental mechanisms underlying disease and to develop new technologies that will lead to actionable diagnostics and effective therapies. We harness the power and possibility of collaboration to drive discovery and set the standard for open, impactful science. For more information, please visit czbiohub.org.

    OPPORTUNITY

We are currently seeking an outstanding Computational Biologist and/or Bioinformatics Data Scientist to join the single-cell data sciences team.

As part of the Data Sciences team at Biohub, the single-cell data science team builds tools and datasets that advance our understanding of health and disease. The group has contributed to Tabula Muris and to the development of the first aging cell atlas (Tabula Muris Senis). These datasets are a bio-molecular gold mine for medical researchers because the mouse is the most commonly used animal model in the development of new drugs and therapies and therefore, research in this area has a global impact. In parallel, the team has developed new tools for cell type annotation and biological data mining of single-cell datasets. The single-cell data sciences team is passionate about extracting meaningful information from whole organism cell atlas and to invent ways of interpreting, visualizing and sharing the data. We are actively involved in other single-cell whole organism cell atlas, where we are leveraging conventional single-cell transcriptomics, histology, spatial transcriptomics and machine learning to advance the understanding of human biology. In line with CZ Biohub mission, we are committed to open science and freely sharing data and code with the community.

The new team member will be in charge of developing computational analysis for large scale single-cell datasets. The ideal candidate will be capable of working independently through the implementation of the pipelines for managing next-generation sequencing data and respective downstream analysis. This is an exciting opportunity to be embedded in a highly collaborative environment that promotes learning and skill development. For this position, we are looking for a team player with strong technical skills in addition to excellent communication skills.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

The Computational Biologist and/or Bioinformatics Data Scientist will work primarily on analyzing single-cell sequencing data from whole organism cell atlas. As a key team member, they will be expected to develop novel computational tools to improve current single-cell analysis workflows and ensure that junior team members are trained on all parts of the work.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • PhD in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Systems Biology or equivalent
    • Experience with single cell transcriptomics datasets and data analysis in Python (preferential) or R
    • Experience presenting at research conferences (posters and talks)
    • Strong publication record
    • Detail oriented including the ability to understand a system of complex interactions and explain this understanding to technical and non-technical collaborators
    • Capable of deep troubleshooting to discover the root causes of problems
    • Working knowledge of version control systems (e.g. git)
    • Comfortable in UNIX systems and working at the command line
    • Commitment to writing well-commented code and clear documentation
    • Positive attitude, willingness to ask questions and learn independently

    PREFERRED/DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • Understanding of cell biology and next-generation sequencing
    • Familiar with bulk RNA sequencing and building custom genomes
    • Willingness to help and mentor team members with different levels of expertise

    APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS
