We are seeking a Change Order Engineer to join the team in New York, NY. This onsite role is ideal for a construction professional who knows how to turn changing project conditions into well-documented, well-priced, and well-negotiated outcomes while protecting schedule, cost, and margin on major projects.
What You'll Do as the Change Order Engineer:
- Own the full change order lifecycle, from identifying scope changes through pricing, submission, negotiation, approval, and execution
- Review drawings, specifications, RFIs, field directives, and design revisions to assess cost and schedule impact
- Build detailed change order pricing for labor, materials, equipment, subcontractors, and time-related effects
- Maintain accurate logs, status trackers, and supporting documentation for all potential and approved changes
- Review subcontractor change requests for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with contract terms
- Prepare notices, backup, and related documentation tied to changes, disputed work, and claims support
- Partner with project managers, superintendents, estimators, field engineers, and project controls teams to capture change events early
- Support negotiations with owners, consultants, and subcontractors by providing clear cost justifications
- Contribute to monthly forecasting, financial reviews, and reporting on change order exposure and trends
- Flag commercial and schedule risk tied to evolving scope, unforeseen conditions, or delayed decisions
Must-Haves as the Change Order Engineer:
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field
- 10+ years of experience in change order management, cost engineering, contract administration, or a closely related function
- Background in heavy civil, infrastructure, vertical construction, or a mix of large-scale project types
- Strong command of prime contracts, subcontracts, and common delivery models including lump sum, GMP, unit price, and design-build
- Proven success pricing and negotiating complex change orders on major construction projects
- Strong understanding of project controls, cost analysis, forecasting, and schedule impact evaluation
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and commercial contract language
- Proficiency with construction management and scheduling tools such as Procore, Primavera P6, or similar platforms
- Advanced Excel skills and strong estimating ability
Nice-to-Haves as the Change Order Engineer:
- Experience supporting high-profile public sector, transportation, transit, tunnel, utility, or major urban development work
- Exposure to claims preparation, dispute support, or formal change documentation on highly regulated projects
- Strong working style in fast-paced project environments with multiple stakeholders and tight deadlines
- Experience presenting financial or commercial change data to senior project leadership
