    Fact-checker for health books and political/current events books published by Charisma Media. Fact-checkers read manuscripts meticulously to confirm all the facts contained within, including the confirmation of reputable sourcing for the endnotes.

    DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

    A fact-checker's duties begin with good research skills and an instinct for knowing when a fact has actually been confirmed. These duties include:

    • CONFIRMING DETAILS: A fact-checker must be able to confirm details using reputable sources.
    • ADDING APPROPRIATE QUERIES: A fact-checker must know the difference between errors that necessitate querying the author or editor and errors that can be corrected by the fact-checker.
    • CONFIRMING HISTORICAL INFORMATION: The dates and details of events that happened decades ago are as important as those of current events.
    • CONFIRMING DATA: This might include the results of studies and surveys. Fact-checkers are responsible for ensuring that any quoted numbers are correct.
    • CONFIRMING SOURCES: The sources of all quoted material must be confirmed, including ascertaining that sources really said or implied information that's being attributed to them.
    • ADDING APPROPRIATE SOURCES: A fact-checker must know the difference between information that just needs to be checked and information that needs to be sourced.

    CONFIRMING QUOTATIONS: A fact-checker must confirm the accuracy of all quotations, including spelling, capitalization, and punctuation

    EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

    • A bachelor's degree in English, communications, or journalism with experience in researching, investigating, and/or fact-checking is preferred.
    • Familiarity with the charismatic-Pentecostal market desirable.

    SKILLS & COMPETENCIES

    • INTERPERSONAL SKILLS: A fact-checker must often leave comments in manuscripts explaining the need to further confirm certain information or explaining the error discovered. A fact-checker needs to be able to communicate issues in a tactful, solution-oriented, professional manner that conveys patience and respect for the author.

    • COMPUTER SKILLS: Mastery of the internet and search skills are crucial to finding accurate and up-to-date information under the pressure of deadlines.

    • ATTENTION TO DETAIL: Information cannot be skimmed over. Accuracy, thoroughness, and clear, concise communication are essential skills for this position.

    • ABILITY TO MEET DEADLINES: Deadlines exist with all types of publications, and this can mean pressure to perform quickly without sacrificing accuracy.

    • ABILITY TO WORK INDEPENDENTLY: As a freelancer, you must be self-motivated and able to set and meet your own deadlines and goals for each project in order to deliver fully vetted manuscripts according to the publisher’s deadlines.
