    About the Role

    JL Hospitality Management is seeking an experienced, hands-on Chief Engineer to oversee all engineering and maintenance operations for two iconic Seward properties: Hotel Seward (year-round) and Hotel Edgewater (seasonal, open in summer). This is a leadership role responsible for maintaining safe, functional, and well-operating hotel facilities while delivering an exceptional guest experience and upholding JLHM’s standards of quality and service.

    The Chief Engineer will serve as the primary engineering leader across both properties, managing maintenance teams, vendor relationships, preventative maintenance programs, and departmental budgets while ensuring compliance with safety, environmental, and company policies.

    Position Purpose

    The Chief Engineer is responsible for maintaining the entire hotel facility, including the physical building structure, all mechanical, electrical, and HVAC systems, and related equipment in accordance with energy conservation and preventative maintenance programs.

    This leader ensures the upkeep of guest areas to maintain an attractive hotel environment, adheres to all company purchasing policies (including the PO process), follows prescribed safety procedures in alignment with company and OSHA standards, and maintains effective energy management and preventive maintenance programs.

    Additionally, the Chief Engineer will conduct training for other departments on the safe and efficient use of equipment and energy as needed.

    Reports To

    • Property General Manager
    • Area Director of Engineering

    Primary Responsibilities

    • Respond to maintenance work orders and prioritize requests based on urgency and impact
    • Source, interview, hire, and technically train Maintenance Engineer Associates
    • Perform and oversee preventative maintenance in guestrooms, public spaces, and mechanical systems
    • Manage the guestroom Preventative Maintenance (PM) program per company SOP
    • Conduct regular walk-around inspections of equipment and facilities with a critical eye
    • Maintain accurate documentation of equipment conditions and repairs
    • Provide departmental training on equipment operation and safety
    • Communicate equipment status to the General Manager and/or Area Director of Engineering
    • Proactively monitor the condition of buildings, grounds, and surrounding property
    • Uphold and model JLHM’s company culture and service standards
    • Create and manage weekly engineering schedules
    • Assist the General Manager with departmental budgeting, forecasting, and planning
    • Provide ongoing coaching, feedback, and performance evaluations to engineering staff
    • Manage operating expenses while maintaining high-quality guest service standards
    • Coordinate with vendors and contractors on engineering projects and repairs
    • Perform other engineering and maintenance duties as assigned by leadership
