Position Summary

We are seeking a seasoned Chief Estimator to lead our preconstruction and estimating efforts in Austin. This leadership role will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of mechanical estimating, client relations, bid strategy, and departmental growth. The Chief Estimator will collaborate closely with executive leadership and report to the Vice President of the Austin Construction Group.

Key Performance Objectives

Within 90 Days:

• Develop a strong working knowledge of Polk’s estimating systems and processes.
• Build familiarity with our Austin clients and general contractor partners.
• Accurately execute take-offs using Polk's Re-Cap system.

Within 6 Months:

• Build first-name-basis relationships with the top 10 GC estimating contacts in Austin.
• Receive at least 3 bids on every major equipment and subcontracted scope.
• Independently complete high-quality prequalification packages and estimates.

Within 12 Months:

• Increase bid-to-win ratio from 20% to 25%.
• Consistently recap and submit bids on time.
• Serve as a mentor and leader to junior estimators, completing performance reviews.

Industries & Project Types

This role will estimate projects in:

• Healthcare (primary focus)
• Commercial – Office buildings, higher education, K-12, and municipal facilities
• Light Industrial/Manufacturing
  Project sizes typically range from $500K to $10M in mechanical scope.

Core Responsibilities

• Oversee and develop estimating strategies and project proposals
• Lead client-facing bid presentations and interviews
• Build and maintain contractor/vendor relationships in the Austin area
• Provide leadership, training, and mentorship to assigned estimators
• Ensure bid accuracy and budget alignment (within 2–5% of awarded values)
• Support operations with seamless project handoffs
• Lead analysis of vendor pricing, subcontractor quotes, and bid-day procedures

Required Qualifications

• 8–10 years of experience in mechanical estimating, preferably in commercial construction
• Strong knowledge of construction systems, contracts, and take-off methods
• Experience with computerized estimating systems and Microsoft Office
• Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
