About Steve Smith Trial Lawyers
Steve Smith Trial Lawyers is one of Maine’s fastest-growing litigation firms. With offices in Augusta and Portland, we focus on family law, civil litigation, criminal defense, and probate. We’re known for bold advocacy, strong client results, and a culture where people genuinely enjoy working together.
We’re building something bigger than a law firm—we’re building a team with purpose. If you’re ready to play a key role in shaping the financial future of a growing organization, we’d love to meet you.
Why Join Us?
You’ll be a key voice at the table. You’ll help guide firm leadership with real-time insight and data-driven strategy.
You’ll own the numbers. From reporting to forecasting, you’ll have the autonomy to manage and improve our financial systems.
You’ll build the future. As the firm grows, you’ll have the opportunity to shape the finance function and your role within it.
You’ll be supported. You’ll work alongside a collaborative leadership team that values clarity, transparency, and follow-through.
Who We’re Looking For
We’re hiring a Chief Financial Officer (CFO) with the confidence, experience, and clarity to lead financial strategy at a growing law firm. This is a position for someone who is hands-on, analytical, and ready to be a trusted thought partner to the leadership team.
You should be excited by the challenge of helping build financial structure—not just manage it. We’re not looking for someone who only reports the numbers; we’re looking for someone who helps lead with them.
What You’ll Do
Oversee all financial planning, reporting, and budgeting
Build and maintain monthly, quarterly, and annual forecasts
Provide financial analysis and insights to support key decisions
Collaborate with leadership on strategic planning, growth goals, and resource allocation
Ensure accuracy and integrity in reporting, cash flow management, and compliance
Identify opportunities for cost savings, improved systems, and efficiency
Prepare financial updates and reports for leadership meetings
Lead and improve financial processes across departments
What You Bring
Significant experience in a CFO, Director of Finance, or Controller-level role
Proven success in financial planning, forecasting, and strategy
Excellent communication skills—especially when translating financial data for non-financial audiences
Strong working knowledge of budgeting, cash flow, KPIs, and performance reporting
High proficiency in Excel; experience with QuickBooks and legal software (Clio) is a plus
A proactive, solutions-focused mindset and the ability to operate independently and confidently
Experience in professional services or law firms is preferred but not required
