As Chief Scientific Officer, you will lead ADLM’s education, publications, and scientific initiatives, ensuring they reflect the most important innovations in the field and enable laboratory professionals worldwide to improve clinical decision-making and advance population health.
Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer and serving as a key member of the Senior Management Team, you will lead three direct reports with a total staff of 13 across ADLM’s education, publishing and scientific content, and data science programs. A key strategic focus for ADLM is not only to serve its core membership, but also to engage a more diverse group of professionals across and adjacent to laboratory medicine, both domestically and internationally. This shift requires scientific leadership to identify and prioritize what matters most for a broader audience. You will bring scientific expertise and a deep understanding of how professionals develop their careers to translate scientific developments into relevant education and scientific programming—spanning professional education, certification programs, the annual meeting, and publications—ensuring each initiative is grounded in value to the profession, credible scientific insight, and financial sustainability.
This is a highly collaborative and visible role in which you will work with committee leaders, mission-aligned organizations, and the Senior Management Team to guide program strategy, support execution of the strategic plan, and develop partnerships that expand ADLM’s reach and impact.
How You’ll Make an Impact
Success in your first 1–2 years will be demonstrated by:
- Establishing ADLM as a recognized leader in laboratory data science by launching a data science symposium, building tiered education pathways, and advancing the dissemination of outcome-focused evidence demonstrating impact on diagnostic practice, operational efficiency, and patient care.
- Expanding ADLM’s education program into a more accessible, year-round model that engages a broader and more diverse global audience and increases participation across career stages and disciplines.
- Strengthening the performance and sustainability of the publications program by maintaining the scientific excellence of Clinical Chemistry and developing a profitability strategy for the Journal of Applied Laboratory Medicine.
Work Environment, Salary, and Benefits
- ADLM currently operates on a hybrid schedule with one day on-site weekly at our office in Washington, DC. Some travel is required to attend board meetings, conferences, partner events, etc.
- The budgeted compensation range for this position is $260K – $280K. We offer an exceptional benefits program, including 21 days of PTO plus two personal days, 13 paid holidays, paid family, bereavement, volunteer, and pet leave, medical/dental/vision plans, up to a 10% match retirement contribution, and more. Responsibilities
Scientific Leadership
- Serve as ADLM’s senior scientific leader, advising the CEO, staff leadership, and volunteer leadership on scientific matters affecting ADLM members and the broader laboratory medicine and diagnostics community.
- Contribute subject matter expertise and thought leadership to ensure the quality, relevance, and impact of key initiatives outlined in the strategic plan.
- Identify and prioritize emerging scientific trends, technologies, and innovations in laboratory medicine to inform program and policy priorities.
Program Leadership
- Set scientific priorities for and lead ADLM’s data science, education, and publishing and scientific content programs, ensuring alignment with strategic goals and accountability for performance, financial sustainability, and value to the profession.
- Lead the development and execution of ADLM’s data science program strategy, including tiered education pathways, evidence-based scientific content, and convening initiatives that support the application of data science in practice.
- Oversee the development and delivery of the professional education program, including webinars, certificate programs, and year-round offerings, adapting content and formats for diverse audiences and geographic regions.
- Partner with the Annual Meeting Oversight Committee (AMOC) and staff to shape scientific programming that drives continued engagement for professionals across laboratory medicine and adjacent fields.
- Oversee scientific publications in partnership with the Senior Director of Publishing and Scientific Content and publishing partners (Oxford University Press), maintaining the relevance and impact of Clinical Chemistry while strengthening the sustainability of the Journal of Applied Laboratory Medicine.
- Establish and deepen partnerships with mission-aligned organizations to advance mutually beneficial joint programming opportunities.
Organizational Leadership
- Collaborate cross-functionally with the Senior Management Team, committees, and external stakeholders to guide program development and drive execution of the strategic plan.
- Work with program leaders to develop and manage sustainable budgets and ensure efficient operations and collaboration across programs.
- Work with the Chief Membership and Market Development Officer to contribute scientific content that supports revenue-generating initiatives and organizational growth.
- Partner with senior policy leaders to provide scientific insight that informs policy priorities and engagement with regulatory agencies.
- Serve as a facilitator for volunteer leadership groups. Guide committees and steering groups to build consensus, inform decision-making, and ensure alignment with strategic objectives.
Qualifications
- Doctoral degree (PhD or equivalent) in clinical chemistry, laboratory medicine, or a related scientific discipline.
- 15+ years of progressive leadership experience in scientific or healthcare-related roles, including 5+ years of senior-level supervisory experience.
- Strong understanding of the evolving landscape in laboratory medicine, diagnostics, and data science, with the ability to inform, develop, and execute organizational or programmatic strategies across multiple programs.
- Exceptional communication skills with the ability to synthesize complex information for both scientific and non-scientific audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to build partnerships and engage stakeholders across sectors. International or global engagement experience preferred.
