    POSITION OVERVIEW

    Reports to the Toddler Teacher and in their absence to the Director of Family Activities/Day Care

    PRIMARY FUNCTION/PURPOSE:

    1. Provide paraprofessional assistance and support to teachers in educating children individually and in-groups in order to meet their educational, psychological, social and intellectual needs.  Provide necessary classroom leadership in absence of the Teacher. 
    2. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
    3. As part of the classroom team, educate children individually and in groups through a variety of developmentally appropriate activities and experiences
    4. Provide individual and special supervision to any children who need personalized attention
    5. In the absence of the Teacher, provide classroom coverage and leadership as directed by the Teacher/Director of Family Programs
    6. Observe children entering day care for any injuries or evidence of illness
    7. Supervise children who are unable to join the rest of the class due to illness or special difficulty
    8. Work in conjunction with the Teacher to plan the curriculum for individual and group activities
    9. Communicate in an effective, supportive, and timely manner with the Teacher to share information and assure effective planning.  Prepare written reports to supervisory staff regarding significant observations of children or parents
    10. Perform other duties and special projects as required

    SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    1. Facilitate effective communication with other staff within an interdisciplinary context, participate in and contribute to staff meetings and the development of policies and procedures
    2. Participate in training and staff-development activities to acquire and maintain both interpersonal and operational skills necessary for successful job performance

    PRINCIPAL RELATIONSHIPS:

    Frequent and significant contact with Teachers and Teacher Aides for the purpose of planning classroom activities, curriculum and resolving issues concerning children

    Frequent contact with children providing direct care, assistant and a nurturing environment conducive to learning

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    EDUCATION: High School Diploma or equivalency diploma REQUIRED.  Associate's Degree in Child Development preferred. 

    EXPERIENCE: One year experience in licensed day care, pre-school or special education required.  Two years experience including supervisory experience preferred. 

    RELATED SKILLS: Skill in establishing cooperative relationships with others, particularly young children with special needs.  Excellent verbal communication skills, including clear speaking voice.  Knowledge of office systems; MS Office preferred. 

    OTHER REQUIREMENTS (INCLUDING PHYSICAL DEMANDS):

    Ability to bend, lift and carry children weighing up to 50 lbs. (pounds).

    Physical agility.
