  • Responsibilities

    POSITION OVERVIEW: The ideal candidate must be highly adaptable to changes in the business need, flexible to working schedules and eager to learn and perform different tasks at our facility in Oxnard, California. This position has a broad spectrum of responsibilities, and depending on the shift, the candidate may be specialized on gate or yard functions or perform both. This is a non-exempt position.

    JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Gate:

    Provide a secure entrance to the facility.

    Manage the flow of truck through facilities gate by providing them clear directions.

    Ensure Chiquita’s intermodal equipment leaving the yard is in the appropriate condition to go over the road and is received in the yard in good condition.

    Complete necessary system input and forms deemed appropriate by management, such as but not limited to: ELR (Equipment Lease Receipt), BOL, report of events (i.e. damages to equipment and property, theft, presence of unauthorized persons), drayage control records.

    Keep the equipment inventory updated and accurate in the system as well as the in gate and out gate of drivers/equipment picking up fruit orders.

    Coordinate with maintenance the inspection of equipment received with damages.

    Assist in physical inventory of equipment.

    Assist in order and cleanliness of the premises.

    Provide solid customer service to coworkers, supervisors, customers and suppliers via telephone, and email.

    Call police or fire departments in cases of emergency, such as fire or presence of unauthorized persons.

    Yard:

    Receive the containers with fruit coming from the vessel: plug the containers to the electrical yard plugs, ensure the reefer unit is functioning and at the right temperature per the content, report any reefer malfunction.

    Prepare the equipment to send to the vessel: assist on information needed to identify the containers to be loaded on the vessel, perform the roll up of refrigerated containers to be sent to the port to be loaded on the vessel and ensure the right content of the containers are sent to the vessel.

    Prepare the equipment for over the road: connect power cable to the genset (and, when required, replace or install a genset) and ensure the refrigerating unit of the containers is set correctly and functioning.

    Receive the equipment coming back from the customers either full or empty: inspection of equipment in-gating to report any damage, identify the equipment with the correct card, plug all refrigerated cargo and ensure the set point and return temperatures are correct.

    Perform regular temperature monitoring to all refrigerated containers.

    Complete necessary system processes and/or forms deemed appropriate by management

    Perform the initiation of LTR process (Low Temperature Ripening).

    Perform the inventory of equipment throughout the yard updating the specific location (spot)

    Help directing the flow of truck through the facilities.

    Assist in physical inventory of equipment.

    Assist in order and cleanliness of the facilities.

    Report any damage observed to the property and equipment.

    JOB REQUIREMENTS:

    High School Diploma/GED

    Strong work ethic, goal driven, self-motivated and teamwork player.

    Able to multitask and work in a fast-paced environment.

    Basic computer skill knowledge required for gate functions.

    The position requires overtime, weekend and holiday time work as well as changes in the working schedule, based on business need.

    PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:

    Most of the activity is performed outdoors.

    When at the gate, the incumbent may be sitting at a desk and performing tasks on the computer and alternating with going outdoors to inspect equipment coming in or going out of the yard

    Incumbent may stand for long periods of time.

    The incumbent will need to plug and unplug reefer containers to 480V outlets

    Walking, stooping, bending, twisting, lifting, pulling, pushing and reaching are required when performing the job duties.
