Bonita Avenue Claremont, California Department: Police City of Claremont Benefits Supplemental Questions To perform a variety of duties in the enforcement of law and order and to carry out special assignments in the protection of life and property. This is a volunteer position. Reserve Officers must have successfully completed a P.O.S.T. (Peace Officers Standards and Training) approved Reserve Academy program. Reserve Officers, under immediate supervision, are responsible for performance of the full range of law enforcement duties. The Position: Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: Under immediate supervision, patrol City in radio-equipped car; answer calls for the protection of life and property; and, the enforcement of City, County, and State laws. May conduct both preliminary and follow-up investigations of disturbances, prowlers, burglaries, thefts, hold-ups, death, and other criminal incidents. Make arrests as necessary; interview victims, complainants, and witnesses; interview suspects; gather and preserve evidence; and, testify and present evidence in court. Contact and cooperate with other law enforcement agencies in matters relating to the apprehension of offenders and the investigation of offenses. Prepare reports on arrests, traffic violations, impounded property, and other case reports. Stop drivers who are operating vehicles in violation of laws; warn drivers against unlawful practices; issue citations; and, make arrests as necessary. Check buildings for physical security, report street lamps that are not working, and report or remove traffic hazards. Search, fingerprint, photograph, book, and transport prisoners. Supervise custody of prisoners and take prisoners to court. Direct traffic and special events, fires, and other emergency or congested situations Maintain contact with citizens regarding potential law enforcement problems and preserve good relationships with the general public. Serve warrants and subpoenas, file complaints, and perform other work related to the processing of misdemeanor and felony complaints. Assist in the performance of special investigative and crime prevention duties as required. Appear in court on and off duty as the arresting officer. Administer first aid as necessary. Attend meetings, seminars, and training sessions as assigned. Assume duties of a disaster worker in the event of a locally declared emergency. Perform related duties as assigned. Ideal Candidate: Knowledge of: Police methods and procedures, including patrol, crime prevention, traffic control, investigation, and identification techniques; and, equipment, jail operations, police records, and first aid techniques. Criminal law and criminal procedures with particular reference to the apprehension, arrest, and custody of persons committing misdemeanors and felonies, including rules of evidence pertaining to the search and seizure and the preservation of evidence in traffic and criminal cases. Self defense tactics. Interviewing and interrogation techniques. Health and safety code, pertaining to controlled substances. Ability to: Observe accurately and remember faces, numbers, incidents, and places. Use and care of firearms. Think and act quickly in emergencies, and judge situations and people accurately. Learn, understand, and interpret laws and regulations. Prepare accurate and grammatically correct written reports. Learn standard broadcasting procedures of a police radio system. Understand and carry out both oral and written directions. Meet the physical requirements established by the department. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Reason through the logic of a problem and solve it. Drive and handle a police vehicle under emergency, high speed situations. Prepare and present speeches related to police efforts in the community. Additional Information: Reserve Police Officer/Entry Level Reserve Police Officer Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Experience: None required. Education: Completion of the twelfth grade or equivalent. Age: Must be at least 21 years of age. Hearing: Will be good and without defect. Weight: In proportion to height. Vision: Uncorrected eyesight should be 20/100 or better in one eye and at least 20/40 in the other eye; correctable to 20/20 in both eyes; free of significant color vision anomaly(ies) as measured by the Farnsworth D-15 or substantially similar test. License or Certificate: Entry Level Reserve Police Officer - Possession of a valid California State Class C driver's license. CPR Certifications. First Aid Certification. Completion of POST certified Reserve Police Officer Academy within 6-months of hire. Reserve Police Officer - In addition to the possession of a valid California State Class C driver's license, CPR and First Aid Certification, the POST certified Reserve Police Officer Academy must be completed upon hire.
