    CLASS DEFINITION

    A Driver I drives vehicles such as automobiles, vans, busses, panel, or pick-up trucks, and other 2 ½ to 6-ton trucks and performs laboring tasks. Work in this class involves no supervisory duties or responsibilities.
    Incumbents receive close supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class work a conventional workweek which may require some evening, weekend, holiday, or callback duty. Work is performed in vehicles and at construction or maintenance work sites where incumbents are exposed to such conditions as inclement weather, poor driving conditions, traffic hazards, heights, noxious odors, and toxic chemicals. Some positions in the Health Department may be exposed to bio-medical waste materials. Work requires strenuous physical activity including bending, stooping, crawling, climbing ladders, reaching, and lifting heavy objects. **

    DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK**
    The work of this class differs from that of the class of Driver II in that it has no lead responsibilities.

    TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF THE WORK (The following examples illustrate the work performed in the positions in the class. Positions may require some or all of these examples depending on the organization of the work within the agency. This list is not inclusive. A position may require related duties not listed, if necessary to accomplish the work of the agency.)

    • Drives automobiles, vans, busses, panel, and pick-up trucks, and other 2 1/2 to 6-ton trucks for the pick-up, delivery, or hauling of personnel, materials, supplies, equipment, food, earth, trash, mail, or payrolls.
    • Operates forklifts, truck-mounted compressors, woodchippers, and farm-type tractors with attachments such as mowers, spreaders, and fertilizers.
    • Performs laboring tasks on such areas as building grounds or highway maintenance, utility operation or maintenance, trash collection, landfill operation, loading and unloading of vehicles, or equipment set-up.
    • Removes graffiti from residential and commercial properties; operates sandblasting machinery to remove graffiti.
    • Works from scaffolding, cherry pickers, or ladders to perform tasks as assigned.
    • Drives and operates vehicles equipped with snowplows and salt spreaders.
    • Performs preventive maintenance on equipment.
    • May drive or operate larger vehicles when necessary.
    • May sort and route mail and packages; operate various mailing equipment including inserters, sorters, and meters; load and unload mail delivery vehicles and hand deliver supplies, mail, and heavy and bulky packages.
    • Positions in the Health Department may handle, and transport live or dead animals and bio-medical specimens or waste material.
    • Performs related work as required. **

    REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES**

    • Skill in the safe operation of automobiles, trucks, tractors, and other related vehicles.
    • Ability to perform automotive preventive maintenance work.
    • Ability to perform laborer tasks.
    • Ability to work at heights.
    • Ability to follow directions. **

    MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS**

    Must have a High school diploma. Must be at least 21 years of age. Must be able to successfully pass a background check and a drug & alcohol screening.

    Equivalencies - Not Applicable. **

    LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATES**
    A valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver's license or equivalent out-of-state driver's license acceptable to the Office of Risk Management is required. Must produce a copy of a clean driving record before the hire date.

    NOTE: Successful completion on an annual basis of a training program that meets the requirement of the Maryland Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Bloodborne Pathogen Standard may be required for some positions in this class.
