    As a Parks and Recreation Maintenance Worker, you will play a vital role in ensuring Parks and Parks facilities for the City of Blue Springs. You will play an integral part of a teamwork atmosphere while maintaining a positive attitude towards our community, our department, our crew, and the jobs assigned to be completed.

    With a primary focus on maintaining safe parks and buildings, daily tasks may vary and will potentially include: Operating equipment used in the City's park areas, buildings and grounds, landscaped areas, and right of ways. Use of equipment may include but not limited to tractors, trucks, trailers, snow plows, hand equipment, power tools, hand tools, mowers, trimmers, and other equipment provided. Work may include collecting trash, clearing weeds and brush, trenching, mowing, raking and edging. This position could include job specific tasks in the field of plumbing, construction, mechanics, irrigation, grounds maintenance, sanitation, and equipment operating. Duties and responsibilities may also include preparing sports fields for practice and games, carrying out a year round sports field maintenance program of sports fields, establishing and maintaining sports field turf. Performs tasks related to sports field maintenance (e.g. dragging/raking fields; lining/painting fields; irrigation system operation/maintenance; laying seed/sprigs/sod; fence repair; weed control applications; etc.) Performs services and repairs as needed to maintain sports fields and park facilities under the general direction of Supervisor. Performs required inspections of playgrounds, skate parks and pedestrian bridges and provides documentation of inspection, repairs and conditions. Maintains knowledge of current guidelines and standards for safety. Set up and tear-down for a variety of special events which may require weekend or after hour work requirements. Winter requirements may include the operation of a snow plow. Employees are required to work in all conditions in the winter removing snow by shovel or snow blower on City Building sidewalks or where needed. Responds to emergency calls for service in our parks, shelters, and bathroom facilities. This position may be filled at the Entry level or Sr. Maintenance Worker level. If hired at the Sr. level, the employee will, at times, fill the role as crew leader on a specific assignment - including coordinating the work of others and including training unskilled and temporary employees in the procedures of the work at-hand. EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: 

    High school diploma (or GED equivalent) is required.

    Must possess a valid Driver's License with the ability to obtain Class E within 90 days of hire.

    CDL is preferred but not required.

    Carpentry, Masonry, Electrical Work, Grounds Maintenance, Landscaping, Playground Safety, Welding and/or Plumbing is helpful SKILLS, COMPETENCIES & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The ability to perform heavy manual labor which entails frequent lifting and carrying of heavy/bulky items such as construction materials, bags of cement, jack hammers, picnic tables, pesticide sprayers, backpack blowers, and full garbage cans which weigh up to 75 pounds.

    The ability to work well within a team environment. Interact effectively with others by communicating and listening to directions or communication amongst team members. 

    Requires the ability to deal with people (i.e. team members, staff, supervisors, general public) beyond giving and receiving instructions such as in interpreting departmental policies and procedures. Must be adaptable to performing under minimal stress when confronted with minimal challenges on-the-job. Perform a variety of semi-skilled and unskilled tasks in the construction, maintenance, and repair of park facilities, grounds and equipment. 

    Perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs to power tools and vehicles.  The employee will be required to work indoors and outdoors, year-round in all types of weather conditions. The employee may occasionally be required to work in high places.
