    JOB SUMMARY Assists teacher in planning, implementing and maintaining a nurturing and supportive education program for Head Start children. The bi-lingual assistant is the designated lead Head Start staff person at times during the day when the teacher is not present in the classroom and supervises all aspects of the program during the teacher's absence. Provides Spanish/English language translation as needed to facilitate communication between parents and other Head Start staff members.

    MAJOR TASKS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Assists with maintenance of a positive and nurturing physical and emotional environment in the classroom. Follows daily plans and classroom routine. Assists with lesson planning in keeping with program performance standards, developmentally appropriate practices, component plans, and children's interests and skill levels that are conducive to learning. Supervises center operations during times when the teacher is not present. Insures compliance with Head Start Performance Standards and State of Colorado Licensure standards. Actively participates in and reinforces children's play indoors and outdoors. Conducts observations, recording, and evaluation of individual children for the purpose of planning activities. Promotes and reinforces children's oral communication. Communicates with children at their physical level. Enforces established classroom rules and limits for behavior consistently and calmly. Follows classroom procedures for health and safety. Maintains a cooperative working relationship with each family. Informs the teacher of classroom issues which may affect program or agency compliance or image. Follows procedure for reporting suspected child abuse. Maintains program records and documents needed for food program reimbursement and other program compliance. Follows site procedures for maintenance and security at the close of each day. Provides Spanish language translation as needed to assist other staff members in their communication with parents and children. May attend home visits to facilitate communication between lead teachers and parents. Requires regular and prompt attendance. Must be able to interact with others in a positive manner.

    IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS Assists teacher in preparing and maintaining an orderly classroom environment. Implements nutrition goals during eating times and during nutrition education activities. Attend parent group meetings, if requested. Advocates for families in the program and encourages their participation. Attends required training, in-services and meetings. Washes classroom dishes to insure that they are ready for the next use, in keeping with food program guidelines. Maintains sanitation of food service areas in keeping with food program guidelines. Receives and stores meals transported in coolers and carriers. Assists assigned children with "helper jobs" relating to food service, in keeping with food program guidelines. Performs other duties as assigned.

    ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

    Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from the Head Start Teacher.

    Supervision Given: None.

    ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

    Education/Experience: Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education or Child Development OR One of the following: a) CDA b) One year Early Childhood Certificate from accredited Community College c) AA Degree in Early Childhood d) Other related Bachelor's Degree might fulfill the requirements, depending on the college course work in Early Childhood or Child Development e) Group Leader Qualifications as per the State of Colorado Child Care Licensing

    PLUS e) Two-years experience in a licensed day-care/preschool. f) Bi-lingual language skills in English/Spanish

    KSA'S AND PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQS:

    Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Current CPR/First Aid certificate. Knowledge of Social Services rules and regulations for preschool programs Organizational and time management skills to handle the workload and frequent interruptions. Must be able to work independently and as a team member. Current physical exam and tuberculosis test results required, per Colorado Licensing Rules and Regulations and Head Start Program Performance Standards. Organizational and time management skills to handle the workload and frequent interruptions. Acceptance of diversity and ability to work comfortably with the public. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Good judgment and decision-making abilities. Excellent interpersonal skills. Enthusiasm and flexibility. Background check required.

    PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Lifting and Carrying: Must be able to lift equipment used in child-care facility and small children aged 3-5 years of age. Must be able to lift coolers and carriers delivered with food service items weighing up to 40 pounds on a daily basis.

    Pushing and Pulling: Must be able to push or pull playground equipment, i.e., tricycles, wagons, swings, etc. each day. Must push or pull boxes weighing up to 30 pounds into and out of storage once a week.

    Body Positions:

    Moves about, bends, sits on floor, stands in activities with young children four hours per day.

    Hearing: Employee must hear children in the classroom and on the playground or be able to communicate effectively with all children and families in the program.

    Vision: Employee uses vision to read handwriting and other written communication, including classroom lesson plans and children's individual plans.

    MENTAL REQUIREMENTS: Mathematics: Must have basic addition, subtraction, and multiplication skills for calculating data and teaching young children appropriate skills.

    Remembering: Must be able to remember children's names and abilities, classroom schedules and details of classroom management.

    Language Ability: Must be able to read and comprehend curriculum, Head Start guidelines and implementation strategies.

    Reasoning: Must make decision on a day-to-day basis regarding classroom management, interactions with parents and other professionals.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT Work is performed in a classroom environment. Work includes frequent interruptions. Must be able to manage all Head Start standards Some evening and weekend hours may be required.
