    The City of Mandan, North Dakota is currently accepting applications for part time positions of:

    Junior Firefighter – Grade 16.

    Salary: $19.85 per hour.

    Applications without a resume will be disqualified. Position remains open on a continuous basis.  Please Note: This is an on-call position that averages two hours per week.

    1. Job Summary:
    • 1.1. Young adults, 16 and 17 years of age, that serve in a support roll for firefighters. Upon learning a minimum number of skills, junior firefighters can assist with fire ground tasks under the supervision of firefighters. Junior firefighters will not enter into hazardous environments, or environments that have the potential to become hazardous. The junior firefighter’s primary role will be as a support function to fire ground operations. Fire ground tasks include establishing water supply, providing equipment and gear to firefighters, relaying messages, and becoming actively involved in training activities.

     

    1. Supervision Received:

     

    • 2.1. The Fire Captain assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

    1. Major Duties:
    • 4.1. Serves as a support function to fire ground operations by establishing water supply, providing equipment and gear to firefighters, and relaying messages.
    • 4.2. Attends classes and training sessions to improve firefighting and emergency medical skills.
    • 4.3. Performs other duties of a comparable level/type as required.
    1. Minimum Qualifications
    • 5.1. Must be 16 or 17 years of age
    1. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
    • 6.1.1. Knowledge of the incident command system

    • 6.1.2. Knowledge of modern firefighting practices and procedures

    • 6.1.3. Knowledge of modern emergency medical practices and procedures

    • 6.1.4. Knowledge of modern forms of fire apparatus and equipment

    • 6.1.5. Skill in the use of a variety of fire suppression and emergency rescue equipment and tools

    • 6.1.6. Skill in the use of computers and related software programs

    • 6.1.7. Skill in the provision of emergency medical care

    • 6.1.8. Ability to pass Firefighter physical fitness test

    • Applicants who are residents of North Dakota and eligible to claim veteran’s preference must include Form DD-214. Claims for disabled veteran’s preferences must also include Form DD-214 and a letter less than one year old from the Dept. of Veteran’s Affairs indicating disability; claims for preference as the eligible spouse of a disabled or deceased veteran must include Form DD-214, a marriage certificate, and a letter less than one year old from Dept. of Veteran’s Affairs indication disability, or the veteran’s death certificate.
