    The City of Mandan, North Dakota is currently accepting applications for part time positions of:

    Firefighter – Grade 16.

    Salary: $19.85 per hour.

    Applications without a resume will be disqualified. Position remains open on a continuous basis. Please Note: This is an on-call position that averages 2 hours per week.

    MAJOR DUTIES:

    • Performs firefighting work in preventing, combating, and extinguishing fires, in answering emergency calls, and in operating and maintaining fire department equipment, apparatus and quarters.
    • The work involves duties of protecting life and property through the performance of firefighting and rescue activities under general training and certification procedures.
    • Incumbents are required to learn and participate in the operation of apparatus and in the performance of hazardous tasks under emergency conditions.
    • These conditions may require strenuous exertion under such handicaps as fire, heat, smoke and cramped and hazardous surroundings.
    • Although rescue and firefighting work are the most difficult and responsible areas of work, a significant portion of time may be spent inspecting premises for the purpose of Fire Code enforcement and preplanning, drilling, studying methods and techniques, performing routine station duties in the care and maintenance of fire department property and equipment, public education duties, and performing other municipal duties.
    • Responds to hazardous materials incidents, such as gas leaks, spills, carbon monoxide, and other chemical incidents.
    • Attends classes and training sessions to improve firefighting and emergency medical skills.
    • Writes reports regarding fire alarms, medical calls, carbon monoxide alarms, of faulty detectors; prepares business inspection reports; reviews fire codes.

    REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

    • Knowledge of the incident command system.

    • Knowledge of modern firefighting practices and procedures.

    • Knowledge of modern emergency medical practices and procedures.

    • Knowledge of modern forms of fire apparatus and equipment.

    • Skill in the use of a variety of fire suppression and emergency rescue equipment and tools.

    • Skill in the use of computers and related software programs.

    • Skill in the provision of emergency medical care.

    • Ability to pass Firefighter physical fitness test.

    • Applicants who are residents of North Dakota and eligible to claim veteran’s preference must include Form DD-214. Claims for disabled veteran’s preferences must also include Form DD-214 and a letter less than one year old from the Dept. of Veteran’s Affairs indicating disability; claims for preference as the eligible spouse of a disabled or deceased veteran must include Form DD-214, a marriage certificate, and a letter less than one year old from Dept. of Veteran’s Affairs indication disability, or the veteran’s death certificate.
