    Airport Maintenance Worker I - Grade 9

    POSITION DETAILS

    Salary: $14.04 to $17.81/hour (DOE)

    Status: Non-Exempt/Full-time

    Department:  Airport

    1. Description of Work
    • 1.1. General Statement of Duties: Performs general maintenance work that is non-custodial in nature around and on the Mandan Municipal Airport’s airfield, runways, grounds, and equipment.
    • 1.2. Supervision Received: Works under the general supervision of the Airport Manager.
    • 1.3. Supervision Exercised: None.
    1. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
    • 2.1. Performs a variety of tasks in the operation, repair, and maintenance of airport buildings, grounds, runways, facilities, and equipment. 
    • 2.2. Mows, trims, cuts weeds or brush, and sprays herbicide applications on grounds as required.
    • 2.3. Picks up trash, rocks, leaves, limbs, and debris, and loads into trucks for removal.
    • 2.4. Operates equipment used in maintenance of the airport including tractor with mowing machine or front loader, snowplow, chemical spreader and any other equipment deemed necessary.
    • 2.5. Performs preventative maintenance on airport equipment and grounds, runway, taxiway, and road surfaces.
    • 2.6. Conducts maintenance inspections and reports deficiencies.
    • 2.7. Operates two-way radio.
    • 2.8. Utilizes necessary equipment including hand and power tools to complete airfield and grounds maintenance work. 
    • 2.9. Loads, unloads, and maneuvers a variety of materials and equipment such as saws, drills, etc. 
    • 2.10. Drives vehicles and equipment with both standard and automatic transmissions to a variety of worksites. 
    • 2.11. Reads and applies instructions and labels for product and equipment operation.
    • 2.12. Utilizes appropriate safety equipment and procedures.
    • 2.13. Maintains simple records, lots, etc. as required.
    • 2.14. Maintains equipment and tools through proper care and maintenance. 
    • 2.15. Performs other duties of a comparable level/type as required.
    1. Minimum Qualifications
    • 3.1. Education and Experience
      • 3.1.1. High School Diploma or equivalent.

      • 3.1.2. Aviation or airport experience is preferred, but not required.

    • 3.2. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
      • 3.2.1. Knowledge of principles, procedures, and equipment involved in maintenance and repair of equipment, grounds, and other related projects.

      • 3.2.2. Ability to create, read, and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

      • 3.2.3. Ability to perform general maintenance work on airfield, grounds and buildings. 

      • 3.2.4. Ability to operate equipment such as tractor, front loader, snowplow, chemical spreader in a manner consistent with safety principles.

      • 3.2.5. Ability to follow oral and written instruction and communicate effectively verbally

      • 3.2.6. Ability to perform preventative maintenance on equipment and maintain accurate records and logs.

      • 3.2.7. Ability to deal effectively and courteously with associates and the general public and present an overall professional image for the position.

      • 3.2.8. Ability to perform essential functions of the job without posing a direct threat to the health and safety of others. 

      • 3.2.9. Skilled in the use and care of tools and equipment necessary to perform facility maintenance and repair tasks.

    • 3.3. Special Requirements
      • 3.3.1. Current valid driver’s license and/or the ability to obtain one from the State of North Dakota within thirty (30) days.

      • 3.3.2. Must successfully complete airport training in Wildlife Management, Emergency Plan, Snow and Ice Control, Airport Self Inspection Program, and FAA regulations regarding safety and security.

      • 3.3.3. This position is subject to a work schedule with varying days off, emergency call-outs and must be able to work overtime, including nights, weekends, and stand-by, as required. This position is also required to be on-call on a scheduled basis.

    1. Physical Demands
    • 4.1. Performs bending, squatting, kneeling, twisting, and reaching to both ground level and overhead; lifts and carries up to 75 pounds; pushes and pulls up to 100 pounds; holds and grips objects; subject to working in awkward positions and periods of prolonged walking, sitting, or standing.
    1. Work Environment
    • 5.1. Primarily outdoors with exposure to dust and pollen; subject to a variety of extreme weather conditions; susceptible to mechanical, electrical, and chemical hazards associated with equipment and maintenance duties; subject to constant and extreme noise, poor lighting, and fumes.
