    Job Description

The City of Philadelphia Mayor's Internship Program (MIP) is an opportunity for current college undergraduate and graduate students to learn about and contribute to the City government that manages operations for the nation’s 5th largest municipality. MIP hosts the best and brightest students from around the nation to come to Philadelphia every summer and see all our great city has to offer.

The Mayor's Internship Program (MIP) is a ten-week unpaid internship beginning June 4, 2018 and ending August 10, 2018. Interns are required to commit to a minimum of 25 hours per week and to be available to work the duration of the internship period.

The MIP consists of three main components:

    • Work component: Placement in a single department completing substantive work assignments
    • ”Exploring Government”: Programming every Friday morning; includes speaker events, visits to municipal operations and programs, and leadership development training
    • My Philly Summer. Interns are invited to participate in the “My Philly Summer” program with Campus Philly. This program brings together interns working across various businesses in Philadelphia over the summer for fun, interesting, and free networking events throughout the summer.

There will also be occasional after-hours social and networking events for Mayor’s Interns to attend but these events are not mandatory.

Mayor's Interns work on projects and tasks providing research, administrative, and staff assistance to city managers. Past interns have assisted city staff in such functions as:

    • Research and analysis
    • Drafting presentations and reports
    • Financial Analysis
    • Program Planning
    • Organizational and Administrative Support

City Summer Interns come from across the country and represent a wide-range of colleges, graduate programs, and majors. Mayor’s Interns have helped complete grant applications, compile and analyze financial data, develop training and policy manuals, and assist in planning and implementing key City events across various departments and agencies. Examples of past participating departments include: Office of the City Controller; City Treasurer’s Office; Commerce Department, Office of Behavioral Health/Intellectual DisAbility Services; Department of Human Services; Police Department; Managing Director’s Office; Mayor’s Office of Community & Economic Opportunity Office of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy.

We believe that part of the summer experience is for interns to experience Philadelphia as a city as well. Interns will have the opportunity to interact with other college students in the area and participate in a number of events and activities to help interns find their fit exploring the city.
